Council Representative/Internal Organizer

The Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) is a long-standing organization dedicated to advocating for workers’ rights and social justice. They are seeking a Council Representative to work independently and as part of a team to facilitate internal organizing, engage members through worksite visits, and coordinate workplace actions.

Responsibilities

Conduct political grassroots organizing by scheduling, advertising, and conducting PEOPLE and Get Out The Vote (GOTV) presentations
Schedule, advertise, and conduct training for stewards, MAT Leaders, and members
Mentor stewards
Utilize knowledge of various collective bargaining agreements to process grievances on members' behalf effectively
Attend and present cases to Local and Statewide Grievance Committees
Represent members, attend pre-disciplinary (Loudermill) meetings, and present cases at the top agency step of grievance hearings
Attend monthly local membership meetings
Attend local and regional Union Management Communication Meetings

Required

A minimum of 6 months of experience in labor unions, labor or community organizing, and basic personnel practices
Possess a valid Washington driver's license, access to a reliable vehicle, automobile insurance, and the ability to travel are mandatory conditions of employment
May be called upon to carry and move up to twenty (20) pounds; participates in activities requiring extended periods of standing and sitting, indoors and outdoors
Possess good written and oral communication skills by reading, writing, and communicating effectively
Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends
The ability to present information and speak to groups of varying sizes
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
Proficient with remote meeting software such as Zoom, Teams, etc
