Responsibilities

Under general supervision, to perform professional field and office engineering work which includes design and construction of roads, bridges, water/wastewater (sanitation), drainage, water, transportation and other public works facilities; to review less complex engineering plans and specifications and land development projects prepared by professional consultants; and to do other work as required

Required

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying
One year of experience performing the duties comparable to a Junior Civil Engineer in Santa Cruz County OR graduation from college with a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited curriculum in civil engineering
Possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver License
Completion of the Engineer-In-Training portion of the examination for Registration as a Civil Engineer in the State of California
Within two years of the date of hire, the employee in the lead position over the Building Plans Checkers must obtain certification by the ICBO as a Building Inspector AND one of the following specialty certifications: Plumbing Inspector, Mechanical Inspector, Electrical Inspector, Plans Examiner, Combination Inspector, or Building Code Accessibility Usability Specialist
Working knowledge of basic civil engineering design and drafting; chemistry, physics and mathematics as applied to civil engineering; civil engineering principles and practices including design, construction and inspection as applied to less complex public works projects and principles of hydrology, hydraulics, strength of materials and structural analysis
Some knowledge of the principles of surveying the application of data processing to solve engineering problems; methods, materials and equipment used in public works construction; and highway alignment and grade standards
Ability to prepare plans and specifications including design and layout; gather data and solve engineering problems; perform engineering calculations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; prepare clear, concise reports; learn to review engineering plans and specifications prepared by private builders, contractors and/or consultants; input, access and analyze data using a computer terminal; plan, design and prepare cost estimates for less complex public works projects; and present technical material and reports to a nontechnical audience

Benefits

ANNUAL LEAVE - 22 days first year, increasing to 37 days after 15 years of service. Available for vacation and/or sick leave.
HOLIDAYS - 14 paid holidays per year.
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE - 3 days paid in California, 5 days paid out-of-state.
MEDICAL PLAN - The County contracts with CalPERS for a variety of medical plans. For most plans, County contributions pay a majority of the premiums for employees and eligible dependents.
DENTAL PLAN - County pays for employee and eligible dependent coverage.
VISION PLAN - County pays for employee coverage. Employee may purchase eligible dependent coverage.
RETIREMENT - Pension formula 2% at age 60 or 2% at age 62 as determined based on provisions of the CA Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act of 2013(PEPRA). Pension benefit determined by final average compensation of three years. County participates in Social Security.
LIFE INSURANCE - County paid $20,000 term policy. Employee may purchase additional life insurance.
DISABILITY INSURANCE - Employees in the General Representation Unit participate in the State Disability Insurance (SDI) program. This program is funded 100% by employee payroll deductions.
DEPENDENT-CARE PLAN - Employees who make contributions for child or dependent care may elect to have their contributions made utilizing “pre-tax dollars.”
H-CARE PLAN - Employees who pay a County medical premium may elect this pre-tax program.
HEALTH CARE FLEXIBLE SPENDING ALLOWANCE (HCFSA) - Employees may elect this pre-tax program to cover qualifying health care expenses.
DEFERRED COMPENSATION - A deferred compensation plan is available to employees.
