Clinical Internship - Unpaid

ASCEND Mental Wellness is dedicated to promoting mental health and wellness in the community. They are offering an unpaid clinical internship for students enrolled in accredited programs in mental health, psychology, substance use counseling, or social work, where interns will receive hands-on training and supervision.

Responsibilities

Interns receive hands-on training through supervised observation of experienced clinicians for a minimum of 2–3 weeks. (Internships typically consist of 16+ hours per week, based on school requirements.)
Participate in one hour of dedicated weekly supervision
Gradually build a client caseload, starting with 1–2 clients per week and progressing to up to 5 clients per day, accounting for potential no-shows
Receive ongoing support from supervisors and fellow clinicians
Gain proficiency in conducting psychosocial evaluations, diagnosing, treatment planning, therapeutic techniques, and clinical interventions. Interns also develop an understanding of community resources and referral processes
Develop a comprehensive understanding of a clinician's role within a community mental health clinic
Maintain a safe environment for all clients and staff
Maintain effective communication with other staff members and supervisors
Preserve human dignity and confidentiality of all clients and act in the best interest of those served through the Agency's programs and services
Always assure quality of work
Adhere to all laws and regulations applicable to the Agency's business
Adhere to the Agency's Corporate Compliance Program and established policies and procedures
Always positively represent the Agency within the community
Have adequate computer skills, or more refined for specific job titles
Actively participate in scheduled team/staff meetings as scheduled by supervisor or as indicated by the program's services
Actively participate in Agency sponsored staff development and in-service educational programs as deemed necessary by supervisor, including mandatory training assigned by job title

Required

Interns must be enrolled in an accredited mental health, psychology, substance abuse counseling or social work program
Second-year MSW student, an advanced standing MSW student, or an MHC student
Work program that requires clinical internship hours for graduation
Valid NYS driver's license acceptable to Agency insurance standards
Must be of good character and background and display an affinity for working with people with mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders
Must have the ability to work independently, have good problem-solving skills and can work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
