Senior Research Assistant 1 (1.5 year term)
Case Western Reserve University is committed to investigating urban air quality and its connections to public health and environmental justice. The Senior Research Assistant 1 will assist in laboratory and field measurements, data analysis, and geospatial analysis, working closely with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and public health officials.

Responsibilities
Carry out experiments according to specific instructions; assist with planning experiments. Collaborate with lab staff and principal investigator to conduct a series of experiments to supply scientific information as part of a larger project. May conduct specific experiments and tasks independently. Test and maintain analytical equipment used for gas and aerosol concentrations of various pollutants. This work will include both laboratory and field components. The field measurements of gases (O3, CO, NOx, CO2, SO2) and aerosols (mainly PM2.5 and PM10) will be focused on various locations around Cleveland and Cuyahoga County. This work includes maintaining records of tests and measurements and performing QC assessments on data. (20%)
Collect, process, and analyze demographic data, especially in the areas when making measurements or using data collected by others. (20%)
Perform geospatial analysis of atmospheric chemistry and demographic data. (24%)
Provide interpretation of data and suggest potential improvements to techniques and procedures. Help to write grant proposals and research papers (including performing literature reviews and writing draft sections). (20%)
Provide research support to help build and coordinate a multidisciplinary team of researchers spanning different schools within Case Western Reserve University and potentially connecting with government officials, companies and nonprofits, and researchers at other institutions. (10%)
Assist with general lab activities. Maintain certain equipment and/or facilities. May assist in training new staff and students on lab operations and maintenance; direct the work of students. Manage supplies of the lab, including inventory and submitting orders as requested; organize lab spaces etc. (6%)

Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) in science with emphasis on Earth Science/geoscience/environmental geology, chemistry, GIS, and environmental studies and 6 months of experience, or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and at least 1 year of experience required
High degree of interpersonal skills and work with other lab members and contribute to study team
Highly organized with strong interpersonal and written communication skills
Experience with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and equivalent programs in the Google Office suite, email, and internet applications/systems
Familiarity with ArcGIS or QGIS and eagerness to become proficient in use of GIS
Some statistical background, and an eagerness to become proficient in using R and RStudio to analyze large data sets
Experience presenting research at undergraduate or professional meetings
Ability to work collaboratively in a small team environment with team members and students
Ability to work under general supervision and seek out effective solutions for project-related issues
Ability to work closely with government and community-based agencies
Ability to work independently when necessary, as well as in a group environment
Ability to meet consistent attendance expectations
Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and the public face to face
Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest
Willingness to learn and work with Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and technologies
