Water/Wastewater Intern (Summer 2026)

The City of Waukee is seeking a Water/Wastewater Intern for the Summer of 2026. The intern will assist full-time staff in the operation, repair, and maintenance of the city's water supply and wastewater collection system while completing college work experience requirements.

Responsibilities

Learns and explores all aspects of the Water/Waste Water Division including: the operation and maintenance of the wastewater collection system; collection, testing, and analyzing water and wastewater samples and preparing and submitting reports to regulatory agencies: and installing, repairing, replacing, and reading water meters
Assists Full Time staff in performing hydrant flushing and flow testing, valve turning and Geographic Information System (GIS) valve locating
Assists in cleaning and maintaining distribution systems
Assist in operating remote camera for wastewater and storm water distribution systems
Completes daily maintenance at City facilities such as mowing or cleaning and assists other Divisions as directed
Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned including aiding in snow removal

Required

Must be 18 years of age
Working towards a Water/Environmental Technology AAS Degree
Able to retain and perform written and spoken instructions
Able to read and interpret technical information from meters, gauges and charts and take corrective action when necessary
Able to make mathematical calculations for probability and statistical inference as well as geometry and trigonometry
Confident in the use of computers and tablets and able to be trained in software required to complete the functions of the position
Must possess a valid Iowa Driver's License and meet the requirements of the City's motor vehicle policy
Able to regularly lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move more than 75 pounds
Able to move objects weighing over 100 pounds using assistive devices multiple times during the day
Able to enter manholes
Able to climb different types of ladders and stairs
Able to enter and work within confined space with proper training and PPEs
Must have an acute sense of smell to readily detect an unsafe environment
Able to maneuver in undeveloped areas on uneven surfaces for up to one mile in various types of weather
Must be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, businesses and community members
