Grader Operator - Laborer General

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is seeking a part-time Laborer General to assist with field work and manage forest roads in Williams, MN. This seasonal position involves operating road maintenance equipment and performing various tasks to ensure the safety and maintenance of forest roads.

Responsibilities

Maintain and operate road maintenance equipment (motor grader) so that forest roads remain in a safe operational status
Remove windfall brush and trees from forest roadsides using road maintenance equipment, chainsaws, hand tools, etc
Mark culvert locations on forest roads and relay needed culvert replacement or repair to the Roads Program Forester or supervisor
Remove, repair and replace forest road signs
Open up beaver dams to alleviate water damages to road at the direction of the Roads Program Forester or supervisor
Assist with herbicide application to maintain road right of way in brush free condition via boom sprayer
Provide labor for cone collection efforts
Transport planting stock to planting sites
Operate crawler dozer on assigned forest development projects

Required

Knowledge of methods, tools and equipment used in maintenance and construction work sufficient to carry out detailed work directions
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including digging, lifting, planting, shoveling, hauling, carrying, bending, pushing, climbing and walking on uneven terrain for extended periods of time in extreme weather and environmental conditions
Ability to maintain and operate road maintenance equipment, motor grader, trucks, ATV's, chainsaws, boom sprayers, and hand tools in a safe and efficient manner
Ability to follow written and oral instructions and work independently
Ability to measure/record and accurately enter data onto paper and computer programs and demonstrate attention to detail
Ability to communicate and interact positively with team members and the public
Ability to communicate using hand-held radio
This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver's license with a clear driving record
Applicants must have the ability to meet the physical requirements and work in the environmental conditions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations

Preferred

Knowledge of forest operations and procedures
Previous experience operating a motor grader to grade and maintain roadways
Basic First Aid/CPR certification or above
Experience operating and performing routine maintenance and repair of heavy equipment
General farm or construction experience
Tree identification skills
