ATTORNEY III

The California Coastal Commission is seeking a Senior Attorney to assist in protecting and enhancing California's coast and ocean. This role focuses on providing legal advice related to housing laws, the Coastal Act, and other complex legal matters while working with the Commission and its district offices.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

Reviewing drafts of Local Coastal Programs and their amendments
Reviewing Commission staff reports on coastal development permit applications, local coastal program submittals and amendments, and other types of proposals that the Commission reviews, and advising Commission staff of potential legal concerns with such reports
Advising Commission staff and Commissioners regarding housing laws and environmental and real property law
Drafting and reviewing legal documents
Performing legal research
Preparing administrative records
Working with the Attorney General’s Office on litigation strategy
Reviewing and editing legal briefs
Drafting portions of staff reports and legal briefs
Drafting legal memoranda

Required

Expertise in California Coastal Act, State Housing Laws, Federal Coastal Zone Management Act, California Environmental Quality Act, Subdivision Map Act, Real Property Law, and U.S. Constitution
Ability to work with broad discretion and independence with minimum supervision
Experience in reviewing drafts of Local Coastal Programs and their amendments
Experience in reviewing Commission staff reports on coastal development permit applications, local coastal program submittals and amendments, and other types of proposals
Ability to advise Commission staff and Commissioners regarding housing laws and environmental and real property law
Experience in drafting and reviewing legal documents
Experience in performing legal research
Experience in preparing administrative records
Experience in working with the Attorney General's Office on litigation strategy
Experience in reviewing and editing legal briefs
Experience in drafting portions of staff reports and legal briefs
Experience in drafting legal memoranda
Ability to work regular hours, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening or weekend work
Ability to travel to other parts of the State as needed
