ASSOCIATE HYDROELECTRIC POWER UTILITY ENGINEER

Caltrans District 3 is part of the Department of Water Resources, which manages California’s water resources. The Associate Hydroelectric Power Utility Engineer will perform engineering work related to mechanical utilities and assist in the operation and maintenance of pumping and generating equipment.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

Perform difficult engineering work relating to the mechanical utilities field and operation and maintenance of pumping and generating equipment
Assist the engineering staff in performing field and office mechanical engineering work such as drafting, performing mechanical designing, and inspecting work of average difficulty

Required

Must have ability to ascend/descend stairs, slopes, and ladders to enter or exit vaults and structures as required for equipment access
Must possess a valid California Drivers License and operate vehicles on public roadways or travel to remote areas
Ability to move 30 pounds
Employee is required to successfully complete all safety training related to the functions of the job
Must be capable of operating a personal computer as use of word processor, spreadsheet, database, and cad software is necessary to perform the requirements of this position

Preferred

Experience preparing and reviewing as-built plans, specs, charts, maps, and diagrams
Experience with pumps, turbines, piping systems, penstocks, gearboxes, etc
Experience with mechanical inspections
Experience making engineering calculations
Experience with preventative maintenance activities on mechanical equipment and systems
Experience preparing engineering reports
Knowledge of Hydro structures
Experience or knowledge of CAD (AutoCAD, Microstation, Solidworks, etc.)
Knowledge of generating and/or pumping plant equipment, such as power circuit breakers, motors, valves, pumps and hydraulics, etc
Experience providing recommendations for corrective actions
Experience reviewing testing of electrical and mechanical equipment
Experience preparing plans, technical specifications, schedules, and cost estimates
