The State of Wyoming is seeking a Cancer Abstractor to manage and implement a confidential cancer records system. The role involves reviewing and coding cancer information from various medical records and performing quality assurance audits to ensure data accuracy according to established guidelines.

Responsibilities

Identifies reportable neoplasms from screening pathology and cytology reports. Enters the identified reportable cases into the suspense file within the database. Enters non-reportable neoplasms into the non-reportable file within the database
Conducts follow-up by sending out letters for follow-up information to all facilities and updates the database with the most current information in accordance with the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR)
Reviews the hospital disease indices at the beginning of each calendar year for all missed reportable cancer cases
After meeting the required training metrics. Analyze and abstract cancer data from medical records including; demographic characteristics, history, topography, morphology, imaging and scans, diagnostic procedures, extent of disease, surgical procedures, treatment, staging, follow-up, physician information and other required information in compliance with standards set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American College of Surgeons-Commission on Cancer (ACos), North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR), American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), and the Surveillance and Epidemiology and End Results Program (SEER) and enter in coded format into master database. Interpret and edit computer-generated error reports to achieve ongoing quality control and accuracy

Required

Bachelor's Degree in allied health field
Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy, and physiology
Knowledge and compliance with HIPAA regulations
Ability to read and comprehend medical documentation, including but not limited to: medical records, radiology reports, pathology & cytology reports, and physician notes
Experience using Microsoft Excel and Word
Communications skills – both written and oral
0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Records and Data Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Records & Data Management Clerk
OR 3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Records and Data Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Records & Data Management Clerk

Preferred

Candidates with medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and medical records knowledge
Those who hold a current certification as an Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) previously known as CTR from the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA)
