Director of Operations - Central Sterile Processing

Detroit Medical Center is seeking an innovative and experienced healthcare leader to drive excellence and inspire their team towards exceptional patient outcomes and operational success. The Director of Operations will oversee personnel, operations, and financial activities, establish management objectives, and ensure compliance with policies while fostering communication and collaboration across departments.

Responsibilities

Directs the personnel, operations and financial activities of assigned areas of responsibility at assigned hospital(s)
Develops management objectives and policies for various departments and monitors results
Interprets objectives, policies, and procedures
Directs the activities of the assigned departments with other departments both within and outside the hospital
Resolves problems with department heads concerning use of resources
Encourages and maintains open lines of communication with and between employee groups, other medical personnel, and patients and their family members
Evaluates the performance of the various departments, as well as the performance of key managers and supervisors
Advises employees promptly when performance problems arise or changes are needed
Establishes the operating budgets for the various departments and monitors performance against budgets
Assists Administration with special projects and with short and long term strategic planning
Attends promptly to the administrative details of the position including the signing of documents, preparation of reports, completion of performance appraisals, and other employee-related actions
Ensures that all operations within the scope or the position are carried out in an ethical, responsible manner
Develops, with the help of the responsible department heads, standard operating procedures for the departments within the position’s span of control
Coordinates with other departments and medical staff as needed
Makes final hiring and firing decisions of personnel within immediate scope of operations coordinating information with upper management and human resources according to established procedures
Approves expenditures to the level established by upper management
Acts as liaison, between the administrative and medical staffs, Board of Directors and external stakeholders
Performs quantitative analysis to support definition and advancement for the hospital’s goals and objectives
Understands physicians’ viewpoints and needs, and works strategically in the best interest of patients and the hospital
Balances cost/quality issues and partners with medical staff to address productivity improvements and initiatives
Identifies the need for policy development and/or revision, defines policies in collaboration with higher level management input, goals and objectives
Oversees or directs the development and/or revision of departmental procedures/protocols
Approves personnel actions such as hires, fires, disciplines, etc
Ensures the timely completion of performance appraisals
Develops current to intermediate goals and measures for area(s) of responsibility
Measures and assesses performance
As requested, assists in long range goal development
Assists in development of and monitors budget for area(s) of responsibility
Monitors activities for and ensures compliance with laws, government regulations, Joint Commission requirements and DMC/Tenet policies
As directed, implements external and internal audit recommendations
Ensures hospital departments achieve objectives for diversity of their suppliers

Required

Bachelor's degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience
Three years of progressively more responsible leadership/management experience in a healthcare setting, preferably within an acute care hospital setting
Analytical ability to create solutions to difficult technical problems such as building, maintenance and equipment, as well as administrative or human situations, to anticipate and resolve a broad range of issues and concerns on multiple, sometimes unrelated topics, to determine the need for process development and refinement, to independently evaluate situations and outline ramifications of multiple solutions or options, to recommend goals for a function/area and understand when intervention in current work processes must occur to ensure successful delivery of service
Ability to plan, organize and administer system-wide programs
Communication and/or interpersonal skills for contact with internal and external customers/stakeholders to obtain and interpret a variety of information based on knowledge of departmental practices, DMC policies and programs and specific technical and regulatory knowledge
Discretion must be exercised in deciding what and how to communicate conflict resolution skills must be exercised where policy issues are concerned both within the functional area and interdepartmentally
Diplomacy, tact and listening skills are required
Ability to read, interpret and write technical materials
Project management skills including the ability to define program, project, or process objectives, identify stakeholders and their interests, plan steps, coordinate and allocate human technological and fiscal resources to accomplish goals and objectives in a resourceful yet timely manner
Leadership skills including demonstrated willingness to pursue leadership roles with increasing levels of accountability, comfort with decision-making responsibilities, coaching, teaching and counseling skills, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others and to forge alliances and garner support
Technical knowledge and proven competency in one or more or the assigned functions and knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements and building costs

Preferred

MBA desirable
Leadership experience in one or more of the assigned areas strongly preferred
