Deputy Director of Communications
Carnegie Council is a nonprofit institution that empowers ethics globally by addressing critical ethical issues. The Deputy Director of Communications is responsible for overseeing content production, audience engagement, and editorial standards across various core issue areas, while managing a team and supporting strategic communications initiatives.
Responsibilities
Engage with Council subject-matter experts (staff, fellows, guests, journal contributors) to distill key insights, unlock new narrative opportunities, and produce thought-leadership content for public consumption
Coordinate with and support the Council’s Communications team in the production and promotion of content across owned platforms, including editorial, digital, audio, video, and social media
Ensure content is accurate, accessible, timely, and aligned with institutional standards and priorities
Innovate on content creation to ensure best-in-class storytelling that drives engagement and opens pathways to new communities for the Council
Work across issue areas, including emerging technology, climate change, migration, and peace and security, to support the translation of complex ethical issues into accessible public-facing content
Coordinate with senior staff across departments, including Programs, Development, Ethics & International Affairs journal, and the Office of the President
Support alignment between communications activities, fundraising initiatives, editorial calendars, and executive-level messaging
Manage and mentor a team of direct reports and collaborate with the Director of Communications on the construction and tracking of the department’s annual budget
Support audience mapping and targeting efforts across owned channels: website, CRM/email, social media
Implement publication and promotion approaches that connect content to priority audiences in policy, academia, media, and civil society
Work with the Council’s digital team to monitor performance metrics and audience engagement data to inform tactical adjustments and quarterly strategic reviews
Apply and maintain the Council’s editorial guidelines and brand standards across content and owned ecosystems
Work with the Council’s editor and program teams to conduct editorial review and quality control to ensure consistency of voice, tone, and accuracy
Streamline senior review and distribution processes for high-visibility content across Programs, Development, and the Office of the President
Support efforts to cultivate and maintain an engaged global community (virtual and in person) around the Council’s core issue areas
Assist with engagement strategies that connect content, events, and digital programming
Engage professionally as a representative of the Council with global audiences across digital platforms and in-person forums
Manage Communications team members, freelancers, and vendors in accordance with institutional policies
Drive timelines, workflows, and multiple concurrent projects with strong attention to detail
Attend and support Council public events held onsite at our Global Ethics Hub, including early-morning and evening programs, on average, approximately four times per quarter, in coordination with relevant teams
Qualification
Required
8–12 years of experience in communications, editorial, public affairs, or a related field, preferably within international relations, policy, media, or mission-driven organizations
Proven track record of crafting impactful narratives, identifying audiences, and driving engagement on complex issues relevant to geopolitics
Exceptional judgment, deep intellectual curiosity, attention to detail, and accountability to complex global-scale work
Top-tier organizational skills and ability to manage multiple competing priorities
History of developing new relationships at the individual and institutional levels with media, conferences, higher education, think tanks, and nonprofits
Minimum of four years of experience directly managing staff
Undergraduate degree with an advanced degree preferred in communications, journalism, international relations, public policy, global security, or related field
Preferred
Familiarity with LLM-enabled tools for research, editing, analysis, or workflow support, with awareness of ethical considerations
Experience supporting YouTube optimization, growth, and audience development
Experience supporting podcast production and growth
Understanding of Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) approaches and data visualization techniques
Working knowledge of SEO optimization and content discoverability
Experience building communities within LinkedIn and emerging platforms such as BlueSky and Substack
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and SharePoint
