Law Practice
Responsibilities
You must be an excellent communicator, in both written and oral form. This includes high levels of proficiency in spelling, grammar, and punctuation
You have to be good at explaining complex things to people of varied backgrounds
You should have a professional but easygoing nature when dealing with clients. It’s important that they’re comfortable talking to you
You should know your limits, be comfortable asking questions, and only give advice when you actually have the knowledge to do so. It’s important that you are able to say 'I don’t know.'
Our clients rely on us for practical advice. In order to give them that, you have to be able to understand their businesses and motivations; you have to be able to see the big picture
This is a service business. You always have to have the attitude of solving the client’s problem, even if the client isn’t quite sure what the problem is
Your subject matter knowledge should be appropriate for your level of experience, and you should be comfortable expanding that knowledge over time
You should be a skilled drafter with excellent attention to detail, including consistency, accuracy, and document organization
You must be able to work independently on assigned tasks and produce work product that is reliable and carefully reviewed. More senior attorneys will review work as appropriate, and you must be comfortable incorporating feedback efficiently and accurately
Your ability to identify issues of potential concern – things our client or other attorneys in the firm may not be thinking about – should be appropriate for your level of experience
You should have good judgment about when research is appropriate and be able to conduct research efficiently
We frequently encounter transactions that are novel in some way, so you should be comfortable applying existing skills and knowledge to new circumstances
You should be comfortable developing new skills, learning about new industries, and adapting to evolving legal and business practices
You should be comfortable using templates, checklists, and internal processes to manage work efficiently and reduce errors
You must be proficient with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook, comfortable learning to use new technology, comfortable working remotely, and comfortable participating in video calls
You should be comfortable using modern legal and productivity tools, including AI-assisted tools, in a thoughtful and responsible manner
You must be able to critically evaluate AI-generated output and should not rely on such tools without appropriate review and independent judgment
You must understand and respect confidentiality, data security, and ethical obligations when using technology in legal practice
You must be comfortable collaborating with other attorneys to determine the best approach to a problem (or the best language for a particular scenario), and you must be willing to embrace someone else’s solution or language. There is no pride of authorship here, and we all understand that people have different strengths
You must be able to balance working independently with asking questions when appropriate, particularly when an issue may have broader implications for a client or transaction
You should be comfortable telling people (either clients or other attorneys in the firm) when you don’t have the skills, knowledge, bandwidth, or resources to meet their needs
You should be comfortable giving and receiving constructive criticism respectfully, regardless of seniority
You should be highly skilled at time management and comfortable working in a remote environment where attorneys are trusted to manage their schedules responsibly
You should respect the fact that we’re all humans with families and other priorities outside of work. We’re willing to work hard, but not all the time
You must be able to think critically, analytically, and systematically
You also have to be able to think creatively
You must be able to grasp complex concepts quickly
You should have good judgment
You must be able to get along with most people
You must be comfortable communicating with people whose cultures, backgrounds, and life experiences are different from yours. Our clients and other people we interact with on a daily basis represent a variety of races, religions, nationalities, sexual orientations, and gender identities
You should be a kind, caring, and empathetic person
You should have a generally positive attitude
You should want to be excellent. We try to be excellent lawyers, providing excellent service, and producing excellent work product
You should want to be a better lawyer (and a better person) than you were a month ago
You must have a high level of discretion, as you will regularly be exposed to confidential information
You must be nimble and able to change gears quickly. We are constantly prioritizing and reprioritizing work
You have to be able to work under pressure. It’s not always the case, but sometimes things are urgent and we need to work quickly
