2026 Summer Intern - Juvenile Justice Services

Chesterfield County's Department of Juvenile Justice Services is seeking a highly motivated intern for their Summer Enrichment Program. The intern will work directly with detained youth to deliver educational programs, develop curricula, and collaborate with teachers and mental health staff.

Responsibilities

Research programming and develop appropriate curricula
Deliver selected programming to residents in a classroom setting
Work closely with teachers and mental health staff to develop lesson plans
Get to know the facility and residents
Perform other work as required

Qualification

Required

Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student with a minimum grade point average of at least 2.8
Able to participate in the full 10-week program
Exhibit a commitment to public service
Genuine interest in learning about public administration
Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required
Positive, self-motivated individual with good communication skills
Knowledge of adolescent development
Comfortable working with juvenile offenders in a detention setting
Ability to work effectively with some juveniles who have behavioral problems and mental health needs
Ability to facilitate psycho-educational groups
Knowledge and experience providing recreational therapeutic activities (Music, art, exercise, play, effective social skills, coping skills, stress management, etc.)
Fields of study may include psychology, sociology, social work, therapeutic recreation, drama, music therapy, art therapy, or physical education

Preferred

Ability to provide a structured program of care
Ability to provide a program of physical education and activities and/or art, drama, music
