This role involves overseeing technical direction, guiding architectural decisions, and managing a large engineering organization while collaborating with product leaders to translate goals into executable plans.
Responsibilities
Own the overall technical direction for application and related services, aligned with Tax product strategy and systems integration
Provide architectural guidance on modular monolith patterns, bounded contexts, integration points, and performance/scalability concerns
Understand and guide the evolution of the complex system and adjustment logic implemented in Microsoft tech-stack like .NET, Angular, Azure, etc
Review and challenge design proposals, spike outcomes, and technical trade-offs from pod leads and senior developers
Ensure AI/agentic features (RAG, MCP tools, multi-agent workflows) are designed on solid, observable, and secure foundations
Lead the engineering discipline organized into multiple pods/squads
Set clear goals, priorities, and sequencing across pods in partnership with Product and Architecture
Establish and enforce standards for code quality, testing, security, and documentation
Coach, mentor, and grow engineering managers, leads, and senior individual contributors; drive career development and succession planning
Create a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement
Partner with Tax Product Owners, AI Strategists, and Tax SMEs to shape roadmaps and convert business requirements into technical epics and clear acceptance criteria
Perform technical feasibility assessments for new product ideas, including impact on the calc engine, data model, performance, and operational risk
Actively participate in daily scrums, refinement/grooming, and planning sessions
Represent engineering in prioritization, capacity planning, and release planning forums
Communicate trade-offs and risks clearly to business, risk, and leadership stakeholders
Own delivery predictability and quality for FIT releases (planning, estimation, dependency management, risk mitigation)
Ensure strong test coverage (unit, integration, E2E), CI/CD practices, and observability across services
Drive incident response and root-cause analysis for production issues; ensure corrective actions are implemented and verified
Oversee non-functional requirements such as security, performance, resilience, and scalability
Work closely with AI Strategists and AI Architects to build new AI capabilities for our consumers
Champion the pragmatic use of AI tools (e.g., Copilot, Cursor) for developer productivity
Qualification
Required
10+ years of professional software development experience, with ideally 5+ years in technical leadership roles (e.g. Development Manager, Engineering Manager) with the appropriate tech stack
Deep hands-on experience in Microsoft tech stack development across .NET backend, APIs, databases, SPA frontend frameworks and cloud platforms
Strong experience running large engineering teams across multiple pods and codebases
The ability to partner with tax product leaders and AI-focused roles to translate product goals into executable technical plans
Deep, hands-on expertise in .NET, C#, ASP.NET, and modern backend architectures (e.g., modular monoliths, event-driven components, API-first design)
Strong knowledge of databases (Cosmos/SQL Server) and performance optimization; comfortable with schemas that support complex calculations and reporting and experience with Entity Framework Core, FastEndpoints, and MediatR (CQRS)
Experience with RESTful APIs & integrations
Event-driven architecture with MassTransit, Azure Service Bus, Azure EventHubs
Proven ability to lead large, multi-team engineering organizations through change and modernization
Experience operating in a pod/squad model with shared services, cross-team dependencies, and a mix of greenfield and legacy code
Prior work on large-scale enterprise platforms (multi-tenant, integration-heavy, mission-critical applications)
Deep curiosity and aptitude for understanding tax products, calculation engines, and adjustment logic, even if prior experience is in adjacent domains
Ability to decompose complex systems into clear domains, interfaces, and delivery increments that multiple pods can execute against
Strong judgment in balancing new feature delivery with modernization, stability, and risk management
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; able to interact with senior business leaders, risk, and operations, and to represent engineering in firmwide forums
Coaching mindset: invests in developing engineering managers, leads, and senior individual contributors; builds a resilient, sustainable engineering culture
Outcome-focused: prioritizes business value, user impact, and reliability over raw feature count; comfortable making and explaining trade-offs
Proven ability to design and implement Modular Monoliths with bounded contexts
Hands-on with Clean Architecture, ensuring clear separation of concerns
Strong application of CQRS with MediatR
Experience with Event-Driven Architecture and messaging patterns
Familiarity with Repository Pattern + Unit of Work
Experience with Factory Pattern for database contexts and SignalR hubs
Comfortable using GenAI tools (e.g., Cursor, GitHub Copilot)
Experience with AI engineering: agent frameworks/orchestration (planners/tool-calling, multi-agent routing), prompt design, function/tool interfaces, streaming UX
Skilled in Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG): document ingestion, embeddings, retrieval, grounding, evals
Working knowledge of Azure cloud services: Functions, Storage, Key Vault, App Configuration, Application Insights, App Services, AKS/Container Apps, API management
