Responsibilities

Assist with design and drafting tasks to help develop roadway plans that support project objectives
Support the preparation of quantity calculations and basic construction cost estimates
Help identify and resolve routine technical or design challenges by applying engineering fundamentals
Work with higherlevel engineers and supervisors within the Highway Design team and other offices to gain guidance on unfamiliar or complex issues
Participate in Scope of Services and review meetings, upon request
Provide basic instructions to survey crews for collecting existing field condition data, following direction from senior engineers
Interpret survey results and incorporate them into design plans
Use computeraided design and drafting tools (CADD) such as MicroStation and InRoads after receiving training
Conduct field checks with supervision to understand site conditions and verify design accuracy
Review portions of plans to ensure alignment with the scope of services, field conditions, and applicable design standards
Assist with researching new design policies
Learn current design practices by attending training sessions, conferences, or reviewing trade publications and research
Assist in analyzing engineering data and preparing technical guidelines, training materials, and other support documents
Support management and senior engineers on special projects as requested

Required

Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering
0–2 years of engineering experience; internship or coop experience in civil, transportation, or roadway engineering is helpful
Foundational knowledge of planning, design, or construction of highway or transportation project features (roads, pavement, bridges, or traffic-related structures)
Basic understanding of civil engineering methods and procedures related to roadway design
Ability to learn and apply federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and procedures governing road design
Ability to assist in preparing and reviewing design plans and reports
Ability to perform basic algebraic and trigonometric computations used in design operations
Familiarity with or willingness to learn roadway and roadside design guidance developed by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO)
Valid Indiana Driver's License

Preferred

Engineering Intern (EI/EIT) certification preferred or the ability to obtain within one year
Familiarity with CADD functions; exposure to MicroStation or InRoads is preferred but not required
