Engineering Manager - MV/HV Power Transformers
Root/edge is a fast-growing, venture-backed energy technology company developing a new high-voltage power transformer platform for the U.S. market. The role is ideal for a well-rounded engineer who will oversee transformer design and ensure manufacturing consistency while mentoring junior engineers and contributing to building new systems.
Responsibilities
Review and refine transformer designs for the U.S. utility and developer market
Apply deep knowledge of U.S. design practices, standards, and qualification requirements
Translate customer and utility specifications into clear engineering direction for global teams
Evaluate electrical design elements including:
Core and coil design
Insulation coordination
Short-circuit withstand requirements
Losses, impedance, and dielectric performance
Assess mechanical design elements including:
Tank design and structural integrity
Cooling systems
Bushings and mounting hardware
Vibration management
Oversee controls and monitoring integration (sensors, temperature and gas monitoring, protection interfaces, OLTC controls, digital transformer technologies)
Ensure all design choices are manufacturable and consistent across multiple production locations
Support type testing, FAT preparation, and U.S. product qualification
Collaborate with sourcing, quality, and production teams to ensure materials and processes meet U.S. expectations
Work with applications engineering and sales to resolve customer issues and address technical inquiries
Develop internal design rules, engineering standards, and review processes as the company scales
Mentor junior engineers in the future and help strengthen engineering culture
Bring a startup mindset and contribute to building new systems, processes, and tools from the ground up
Qualification
Required
8+ years of experience in high-voltage power transformer design or engineering management
Well-rounded engineering capability across electrical, mechanical, and controls domains
Strong understanding of U.S. transformer design requirements, validation, and manufacturing processes
Familiarity with IEEE and ANSI standards, as well as major utility specification practices
Ability to review full transformer designs and identify gaps, risks, and improvement opportunities
Experience adapting global transformer designs to U.S. customer requirements
Comfortable collaborating with global engineering and manufacturing teams
Strong communication skills with both technical and customer-facing stakeholders
Experience in a startup or new-product environment is ideal; willingness to roll up your sleeves is essential
Preferred
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering preferred
Candidates with Mechanical or Controls backgrounds and deep transformer experience will also be considered
