The Director, Talent Development is responsible for building and executing the strategic direction of Talent Development, focusing on developing competencies and skills for associates and leaders at all levels to support PetSmart's objectives.

Responsibilities

Create and implement PetSmart’s Talent and Team Development strategies to position the company as an employer of choice through differentiated and targeted offerings aligned to strategic priorities and long-range plans
Co-author the strategic definition for Talent Development at PetSmart and ensure senior leader and business owner needs are met
Oversee the Talent Development budget and P&L, holding teams accountable to spend and expenditure processes
Partner with HRBPs and senior leaders (including SVPs) to identify learning needs tied to strategic priorities, business gaps, and new technology or process changes
Foster a culture of development that recognizes the leader–associate relationship as a critical driver of organizational effectiveness and associate experience
Design and manage a comprehensive portfolio of development programs aligned to company values, competencies, and growth strategies, spanning all levels from front-line to executive across stores, field, distribution centers, and offices
Own and maintain the leadership and team development program catalog, conducting ongoing gap analysis and building a prioritized roadmap for future offerings
Partner with HRIS to ensure learning and career development technology solutions are implemented and supported (e.g., mentoring, career development tools)
Lead a team of Talent Development Consultants, providing day-to-day direction, coaching, and performance management
Set clear goals for the team, drive engagement and retention, recruit new talent, and actively coach low performers
Build and execute a measurement strategy to ensure learning solutions are adopted and drive measurable business impact
Build strong partnerships across the HR function to ensure alignment, transparency, and proactive communication
Establish and execute the strategic direction of talent development, including large-scale initiatives such as technology enhancements, program launches, and multi-year roadmaps
Develop working knowledge of all aspects of the business and leverage subject matter experts for content development
Maintain understanding of key business objectives, metrics, and strategic plans
Oversee the design and development of leadership and learning materials (e.g., instructor-led training, eLearning, job aids, posters, workshops, events)
Review and refine learning content to ensure quality, inclusive language, accuracy, readability, and effectiveness
Respond promptly to team members and business partners with solutions to problems and requests
Manage multiple projects with overlapping timelines across stores, distribution centers, and corporate offices
Demonstrate flexibility and adapt to changes in scope, timelines, and priorities
Create implementation plans that ensure high-quality participant experience, sustainability, and cost-effective use of resources
Facilitate leadership programs, in-tact team sessions, workshops, and onboarding events as needed (virtual and in-person)
Measure program effectiveness using analytics and trends to continuously improve learning solutions
Promote collaboration by sharing best practices, resources, and innovations across the team
Influence leaders and business partners to adopt change

Required

Proven experience building and implementing talent development and team strategies, including project management, content development, soft-skills development, and performance improvement
10+ years of leadership experience
10+ years of instructional design, learning and development, and/or retail leadership experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Keen knowledge of adult learning principles
Internal or external consulting experience in areas such as program management, assessments, performance management, and career development
Experience developing learning measurement strategies focused on reaction, knowledge transfer, on-the-job application, and business impact
Establish credibility quickly and build trust with senior stakeholders and teams
Anticipate and adapt to changing business needs
Exhibit effective facilitation skills, executive presence, and influence
Focus on personal development and the development of others
Delegate effectively and manage teams with clarity and accountability
Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills with executive presence
Proven interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across all organizational levels
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining quality and meeting deadlines
Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous environments with limited direction
Experience creating and deploying learning in multiple formats (in-person, virtual, eLearning)
Highly organized with a track record of innovative problem solving
Proven computer literacy, including experience with eLearning authoring and graphic design tools; Adobe Creative Suite and Articulate Storyline preferred
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office
Experience developing eLearning courses, creative concepts, scripts, and storyboards
