Court Interpreter (Spanish)

The Maryland Judiciary is seeking a Spanish Language Court Interpreter for the Clerk's Office in the Courtroom and for Court-Ordered Mediation. The role involves performing interpretation duties during various legal proceedings and assisting the public in accessing court services.

Responsibilities

Serve as a Spanish Language Court Interpreter in the courtroom and for court ordered mediation; plea negotiations; trustee, examiner, and Magistrate?s hearings; court-assigned counsel; home visitations; parenting classes; and courtroom interpretation for interested parties as demand necessary by a presiding judge
Interpret outside of the courtroom for services ordered by the court for domestic, juvenile, civil non-domestic and psychological evaluations
Assist at the Clerk?s Office counter and information desks, free-of-charge events conducted by the courts and to assist the public to access court services
Assist Court Interpreter Coordinator as requested

Required

High school diploma (or GED equivalent)
One (1) year of experience providing interpreting services as a freelance or court interpreter
Maryland State Certification or Member of State Certification in the Council for Language Access or Federal Certification as a Spanish Court Interpreter
Knowledge of legal terminology and the legal process
Knowledge of the Maryland Judicial System
Knowledge of the Code of Professional Conduct for Court Interpreters, and compliance
Native or near native knowledge of English and Spanish to provide interpretation with correct grammar, idioms, and pronunciation
Ability to interpret in simultaneous and consecutive modes, to sight translate documents varying in levels of difficulty and legal terminology, and to team interpret effectively
Ability to remain poised in stressful and pressured situations
Ability to provide consistent, professional, and courteous service
Ability to use tact in responding to staff, public officials, and the public
Ability to work independently
Ability to operate a computer
Ability to perform all essential functions of position
Ability to prioritize work assignments
Physical ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects
