Engineering Technician III - Wake Co

The N.C. Department of Information Technology is seeking an Engineering Technician III to serve as a lead project inspector in the Century Center Resident Engineer’s Office. This role involves supporting engineers in managing highway construction projects, monitoring progress, and ensuring compliance with plans and specifications.

Responsibilities

Serve as a lead project inspector and support higher level engineers in the administration of medium to large highway construction projects
Monitor daily progress of projects and resolve constructability issues to maintain project schedules
Direct and schedule the work of technicians in inspecting every phase of a construction project to ensure it is built according to plans and specifications in a timely and cost-effective manner
Manage all aspects of assigned construction projects with limited supervision from higher level engineers
Supervise and train multiple technicians, including Department employees and contract construction inspectors
Obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing related to this position
May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays and extended hours as necessary

Required

Associate's degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Employee must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing related to this position
Employee must be able to operate a motor vehicle
Good communication skills are needed
Demonstrated ability to supervise the activities of lower-level employees and instruct them to proper work methods
Will maintain project diaries on a daily basis including correspondence with contractors
Employee will perform both office and field duties
Projects may last for several months or longer
May be subject to a wide range of hazards such as rough or uneven terrain and/or work in adverse weather conditions to include heat or cold
Employee will be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
May be required to work nights or weekends
Safety toe shoes required

Preferred

Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
Experience with mathematical functions including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups
Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments
