Responsibilities
As a member of the Board of Directors, you are entrusted with overseeing the strategic direction, financial health, and overall success of the organization
Board members are responsible for guiding the overall strategic direction of the organization
This includes participating in the development and approval of the organization’s vision, goals, and long-term strategies
Members are responsible to ensure legal compliance in operations, fiscal responsibilities for state and federal requirements, while also ensuring necessary liability procedures are in place
Board members are expected to contribute their professional expertise and varying experiences to enhance the organization’s processes
Whether through formal meetings or informal discussions, sharing knowledge can help shape important organizational strategies and initiatives
Leveraging personal and professional networks to benefit the organization is crucial
Board members should facilitate connections with potential donors, partners, and influencers, thus expanding the organization’s visibility and influence within its industry and community
Engaging in networking activities and fostering relationships can directly contribute to the organization’s growth, outreach, and success
Board members serve as ambassadors for the organization, advocating on its behalf to external stakeholders, including the community, government bodies, and other organizations
Members should actively represent the organization’s mission, values, and goals, highlighting its impact and fostering positive public relations
Advocacy efforts include speaking at events, engaging in community outreach, and supporting fundraising campaigns
Regular attendance and active participation in board meetings are critical
Board members must review meeting materials in advance, contribute to discussions, and vote on key issues that impact the organization’s success
It is important to be present, engaged, and prepared, as the decisions made in these meetings guide the organization’s future
Board members have a fiduciary duty to ensure the financial health of the organization
This includes reviewing and approving annual budgets, financial statements, and fundraising plans
Members are expected to support efforts to secure financial resources through donations, grants, and fundraising events
Board members should assist in identifying new revenue streams and help monitor financial performance to ensure sustainability
The role of a Board of Directors member extends beyond governance—it is a dynamic and active involvement in all aspects of the organization’s growth and success
By sharing your expertise, networking, advocating for the organization, engaging in meetings, supporting fiscal needs, and promoting awareness, you help ensure the long-term viability and impact of the organization
Time commitment will consist of roughly five meetings a year with flexibility for more
Board members would be expected to volunteer thirty - forty hours a year or whatever amount above and beyond as one sees fit
Qualification
Required
Leadership and governance skills, including experience in strategic planning, organizational leadership, and decision-making
Knowledge or experience in fundraising, advocacy, and resource development to drive organizational outreach initiatives
Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively within a team-oriented environment
Professional experience in non-profit management, legal, finance, public relations, or related fields is an asset
