Mechanical Engineer (contract)
Microsoft is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join a dynamic hardware reliability team focused on leveraging advanced mechanical simulations to optimize product performance. Responsibilities
Import design databases from CAD systems, create appropriate mesh structures, and conduct finite element analyses independently
Perform drop and vibration modeling simulations to assess product durability and reliability
Conduct thermal and thermo-mechanical performance analyses to evaluate product behavior under various environmental conditions
Simulate assembly processes with varying stress states to identify potential manufacturing issues
Implement global-local modeling techniques for detailed stress analysis in critical regions
Execute Design of Experiments and sensitivity analyses by systematically varying part dimensions in assemblies
Develop constitutive models by fitting experimental data parameters to available material models
Identify and specify materials characterization tests when needed to support analysis requirements
Collect problem inputs and requirements from stakeholders to define analysis scope
Interpret simulation results through detailed post-processing and visualization
Create comprehensive technical reports documenting analysis methodologies, results, and findings
Propose design and process modifications based on analysis outcomes and engineering judgment
Qualification
Required
Minimum 3 years of hands-on industry experience with stress analysis
Minimum 3 years of practical experience using FEA software such as Abaqus or Ansys
Minimum 2 years of experience with CAD software including CREO or SolidWorks
Proven track record of independently conducting finite element analyses in a professional setting
Demonstrated experience with material models, element types, and boundary condition selection
Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, or related engineering field
Stress analysis and failure theory application
Proficiency in FEA software including Abaqus or Ansys
CAD software expertise with CREO or SolidWorks
Linear and non-linear finite element analysis techniques
Shock and drop simulation methodologies
Material modeling and constitutive behavior understanding
Hypermesh or equivalent pre-processing tools
Mechanics of materials principles
Experimental property characterization for polymers and metals
Thermal engineering fundamentals
Analytical and problem-solving abilities
Verbal and written communication skills
Creativity in approaching complex engineering problems
Detail-oriented approach to technical work
Team collaboration and interpersonal skills
