Intern, R&D Undergraduate Summer - Consortium for Research and Education in Power and Energy Systems

Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a Summer - R&D Undergraduate Intern to join their research organization as part of the Consortium for Research and Education in Power and Energy Systems. The intern will collaborate with a mentor and a team of researchers to perform research and development in power and energy systems, focusing on areas such as grid security, data analytics, and cyber-physical systems.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with a mentor and a team of researchers for a specific project and task
Perform valuable research and development to solve complex problems
Gather and analyze data for grid, energy systems, and cyber-physical system to help answer complex research questions
Work on power & energy systems, in areas such as:
Grid security
Data center grid integration
Complex optimization and forecasting
Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, and data science
Real-time simulation in smart grid operations
Power market and reliability
Power system modeling, control, and optimization
Economic operation of power systems
Work on cyber-physical systems, in areas such as:
Cyber resiliency and cyber threats for control centers
Cyber-physical test bed
Data sharing and analytics including privacy
SCADA and Communications
Cybersecurity and cyber attack in smart grid
Smart grid vulnerability
Data analytics

Required

Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program
Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
U.S citizens, legal permanent residents, asylees or refugees in the U.S

Preferred

Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program at one of the following CREPES partner universities: Florida International University, University of Texas at El Paso, or Alabama A&M University
Majoring in an engineering or related scientific field
Interest in Power and Energy Systems and/or Cyber-Physical Systems
Experience coding or in software development
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision
Ability to work in a team environment
