Intern, R&D Undergraduate Summer - Future of Research for Secure Energy and Earth Systems (FORSEES),

Sandia National Laboratories is seeking motivated undergraduate students in science, engineering, and math for their Future of Research for Secure Energy and Earth Systems (FORSEES) Intern Institute. Interns will work on challenges related to earth systems and energy security, engaging in hands-on research and collaborating with scientists and engineers to deliver impactful results suitable for publication.

Responsibilities

Collect and analyze various data sets related to geophysics, geotechnology, atmospheric science, geomechanics, geochemistry, subsurface science, and renewable energy technologies, including wind and wave power, geothermal energy, solar photovoltaics, and concentrating solar
Present summer research at the end-of-summer FORSEES symposium
Collaborate on research papers, reports, and presentations
Run existing modeling codes and developing new models and algorithms

Required

Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program
Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Preferred

Exceptional written, oral and visual communication skills
Proficiency with modern computer languages (e.g. PYTHON, R, MATLAB, C/C++, FORTRAN-XX, MPI, Jupyter, Julia, etc.)
Experience with modular computer software development practices
Experience with laboratory and/or field procedures and protocols
Experience with machine learning analysis
