Electrical Engineering Intern - Transportation Communications/ITS
CDM Smith is looking for an Electrical Engineering Intern for Summer 2026, who will work with a dynamic team of industry-leading engineers on a diverse portfolio of public, federal, and industrial projects. The intern will assist with telecom/communications design tasks and collaborate across disciplines to deliver cohesive designs for transit and roadway environments.
Responsibilities
Assisting with telecom/communications design tasks (under supervision), such as:
Fiber‑optic backbone and room layouts; cable routing, terminations, labeling, and splicing plans
Radio and wireless support (e.g., public‑safety DAS, cellular DAS, point‑to‑point/point‑to‑multipoint links) and coordination of equipment locations
Low‑voltage systems integration support (CCTV, Wi‑Fi, public address/variable message signs) including device schedules and panel connection diagrams. (Technologies reflect typical Communications/ITS scopes in our practice.)
Preparing and editing design deliverables in AutoCAD/Civil 3D/Revit (e.g., plans, details, one‑lines, rack elevations) and help maintain drawing standards and sheet sets. (Representative intern tasks have included editing CAD drawings, QC of load lists, and cable/conduit sizing support.)
Compiling bill of materials, equipment cut sheets, and vendor quotes; assist with specification markups and comment resolution matrices
Helping draft field notes, redlines, and meeting minutes; track action items across the team
Supporting QA/QC checklists for calculations and design packages
Collaborating across disciplines (civil/structural/electrical/architecture) to deliver cohesive, buildable designs for transit and roadway environments
Qualification
Required
Currently enrolled and pursuing a Bachelors or Master's in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Electrical Technology or related discipline with an interest in power systems and/or electrical distribution
Strong written and verbal communication skills and an interest in transportation/transit projects
Preferred
Coursework or hands-on projects in one or more of: circuits, signals, communications systems, data networks, power for low‑voltage systems, control systems
Familiarity with AutoCAD (coursework or project experience)
Exposure to fiber optics, DAS, CCTV/PA/VMS, Ethernet/IP networking, or RF basics
Experience with Revit, Civil 3D, or scripting (e.g., Excel/VBA, Python) for engineering workflows
Interest in transit facilities and transportation infrastructure
