Responsibilities

Assists the Assistant General Counsel in supervising, assigning, planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, reviewing, and monitoring the work of staff in the Litigation Services unit
Responsible for performing complex and difficult litigation and legal services in connection with various CalSTRS activities
Represents CalSTRS in administrative hearings, general litigation, and other legal proceedings
Drafts advisory and other legal opinions
Oversees the work of outside counsel

Required

An active membership with the California State Bar
Experience supervising, directing, and reviewing the work of attorneys and legal staff
Ability to perform and oversee the most complex litigation and legal services and provide innovative recommendations and solutions
Experience conducting trials, administrative hearings and/or other legal and evidentiary proceedings
Ability to maintain open and effective communications with supervisor(s), keep them informed, and invite response and feedback for professional growth
Ability to develop, maintain and strengthen positive working relationships
Experience working with and presenting to board members, executive staff, and other senior leadership
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Demonstration of strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple competing priorities, and identifying important issues for timely escalation
