Accounts Receivable & Billing Intern

Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation’s largest municipally owned utilities. The Accounts Receivable and Billing Intern will support the team in ensuring accurate billing and revenue collection while gaining hands-on experience in public sector finance operations.

Responsibilities

Assist in reconciling outstanding billing records with internal systems and external documentation
Review historical invoices for completeness and accuracy, ensuring compliance with internal policies
Collaborate with staff to document billing workflows and identify areas for improvement
Assist in analyzing aging reports to identify long-outstanding accounts and support follow-up strategies
Participate in team meetings and project check-ins
Perform data entry and validation tasks under supervision
Communicate with team members to clarify task requirements
Maintain organized records of work completed
Complete assigned project tasks with accuracy and timeliness
Demonstrate increasing independence and initiative over the course of the internship
Develop a foundational understanding of billing systems, reconciliation, and financial documentation
Contribute to backlog reduction in a measurable way (e.g., number of records reviewed or corrected)

Required

Undergraduate Accounting students will need to maintain a 2.5 GPA or above throughout the internship

Preferred

Enrolled in an accredited certificate, 2-year or 4-year program during their internship
Be enrolled in an academic program in Accounting, Finance, Data Analytics, Public Administration, Project Management Economics or related a field
Coursework or Training In: Introductory and intermediate Accounting or Finance
Coursework or Training In: Business math or data analysis
Coursework or Training In: Spreadsheet tools (especially Microsoft Excel)
Coursework or Training In: ERP or billing systems
Strong proficiency in Excel (e.g., formulas, sorting/filtering, pivot tables)
Basic understanding of financial documents (invoices, statements, reconciliations)
Comfortable working with large datasets and maintaining accuracy
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Ability to follow structured processes while asking thoughtful questions
Good communication skills—both written and verbal
Willingness to learn, take initiative, and work collaboratively with a team
Any experience in an office, customer service, or finance-related setting would be helpful
