The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) oversees building and maintaining the nation’s 5th largest interstate system and the 3rd largest number of bridges. This position will manage design consultants and ensure effective project development and implementation for various transportation projects.

Responsibilities

Manage design consultants through the Project Development Process
Distribute plans to district staff specialists for review
Work with the design consultants to ensure that all comments are incorporated into the plans
Answer questions during construction once a low bidder has been awarded
Acts as staff specialist, developing & evaluating plans & criteria for variety of projects & activities to be carried out by others
Assess feasibility & soundness of proposed engineering designs, evaluation tests, products or equipment when necessary data is insufficient or confirmation by testing is advisable
Supervise/lead team of lower level transportation engineers, technicians, &/or support personnel by assigning tasks, monitoring work progress, & evaluating the work completed on highway plans
Perform other supervisory responsibilities including completing performance evaluations, coaching staff, & approving leaves for subordinate staff
Develop in-house plans &/or review designs proposed for all construction submitted by District Engineers, consulting engineers, & Local Governments
Incorporate geometric, hydraulic & structural design techniques in plan preparation using CADD or drafting tools to draw plans
Interpret complex plans to provide for effective implementation & minimize chance of accident, conflict & delay
Coordinate design work with District Survey area
Assure accurate & timely updating of management information systems as they relate to the delivery of the program
Sign plans &/or other engineering documents as registered professional engineer
Attend project scope field reviews
Prepare plans, design revisions to solve plan implementation problems
Make recommendations for repairs &/or replacement for construction roadways
Recommend &/or design change orders, review complex engineering reports & analyze bids
Instruct & train employees in areas of CADD techniques, computation of plan quantities, & general coordination of design process through completion of final contract plans
Direct engineering/technical activities on behalf of supervisor to plan, schedule & coordinate work
Assist in development of section policy, budget preparation &/or long range planning
Advise offices, consulting firms, Federal Highway Administration, local public agencies & others with projects/problems in assigned area of expertise
Testify in civil court proceedings as employee of Department
Represent department at conferences to resolve questions
Operate state vehicle to travel throughout district to conduct field reviews of project implementation &/or review site of proposed project

Required

Licensed as registered professional engineer by Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors
12 mos. exp. as group or project leader providing work direction & training to engineering technicians &/or lower-level engineers
12 mos. exp. in conducting engineering related research (i.e., conducting engineering related research only applies to staff specialist positions)
If assigned to operate a state vehicle to travel to & inspect project sites, must possess valid driver's license

Preferred

Licensed as registered professional engineer by Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors; & 12 mos. exp. as Transportation Engineer 2, 85642
Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above may be substituted for the experience required, but not for the mandated registration
