Parks and Recreation Forest Ranger, SG-12 HELPS*
New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation is seeking a Parks and Recreation Forest Ranger to oversee the prevention and control of forest fires and to protect state parklands. The role involves organizing search and rescue operations, providing education to the public, and supervising seasonal employees.
Government Administration
Responsibilities
Responsible for the prevention and control of forest fires
For the protection of state parklands
For the conservation of fish and wildlife and other natural resources found in state parklands
Organize and direct search and rescue emergency operations
Provide information and education to a variety of youth and adult groups
Have substantial contact with the public and other law enforcement personnel
May oversee the work of seasonal employees
Qualification
Required
An Associate's or higher-level degree in parks, recreation, forestry, environmental sciences or fire sciences; OR a high school or equivalency diploma and one year of experience in forest management, forest fire control, wildlife preservation, or search and rescue; OR a high school or equivalency diploma and one year of paid firefighting experience; OR a high school or equivalency diploma and two years of volunteer firefighting experience
Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education
Must be able to work a variable schedule which may include weekends and holidays
Must possess and maintain a valid NYS driver's license as a term and condition of employment
Must have the ability to stand for prolonged periods, climb, pull and lift heavy objects
Must obtain and maintain Certifications in First Aide, CPR an AED as a term and condition of employment
Must have the ability to supervise and train others
Must obtain Peace Officer Certification during the probationary period and must maintain certification as a term and condition of employment
Must be physically able to perform fire suppression and Search and Rescue Activities for prolonged periods of time
There are physical/medical requirements for this position which includes binocular visual acuity of not less than 20/30 with or without correction; free of any medical condition, including alcohol abuse, and/or psychiatric disorder that would jeopardize the safety and health of the public, and/or other employees or would clearly interfere with the ability to perform the essential functions of the position
