GIS Application and Database Developer (GIS Applications Developer)

Indiana University is a long-standing, state-supported organization conducting geological research and providing geological information. They are seeking a GIS Application and Database Developer to design, develop, and maintain enterprise-level geospatial and relational database systems, as well as web applications and data services to support research activities and geologic modeling workflows.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, and administer enterprise geospatial and relational databases, focusing on Microsoft SQL Server and Esri SDE
Develop and enhance web-based GIS applications and map services integrating IGWS data using ArcGIS Server/Online and related technologies
Maintains and develops Python-based ArcGIS tools to support geologic modeling and mapping; perform data extraction, migration, and transformation for heterogeneous datasets
Participate in professional development activities, conferences, and training sessions to stay current on GIS technologies, database management, and geospatial standards
Contribute to IGWS committees and initiatives that advance geospatial data integration and support scientific research objectives
Designs, develops, customizes, and maintains various GIS applications; writes specialized routines and modules for database, web, and/or stand-alone application systems and ensures that systems are successfully implemented
Evaluates current GIS systems and recommends improvements and/or new purchases; documents, develops, and executes data quality assurance processes/procedures (including testing)
Performs GIS systems and database analysis related to the design, development, and support of customized GIS applications; performs systems studies to include feasibility, conceptual design and development and implementation planning; prepares estimates of resource requirements for time and equipment for systems and applications design; presents detailed designs and requirements to the user, and obtains agreement and approval
Ensures data security in GIS systems and applications; prepares system/application and other user documentation
Communicates and consults with various stakeholders to ensure GIS systems and applications are configured to support project needs; develops and provides training and support for GIS systems/applications as needed
Researches and stays up-to-date on system/application development best practices, approaches, and technology
May provide support and guidance to less experienced staff

Required

Bachelor's degree in geographic information science, geology, computer science, information/data science, or related field
2 years of applications development, geospatial data platforms development, or related experience
Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University Upon Date of Hire

Strong familiarity and knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server or other relational databases
Strong familiarity and knowledge of ArcGIS 9.3 or newer
Strong familiarity and knowledge of AutoCAD

Preferred

Master's degree in GIS, Geography, Informatics, Computer Science, or a related field
3 years of applications development, geospatial data platforms development, or related experience
3 years of experience in geospatial data management and enterprise application development
Additional degrees, certifications, or coursework in data architecture, data management, cartography or and/or enterprise software development
Proficiency with ArcGIS Server and SDE administration
Proficiency with Microsoft SQL Server and RDBMS administration
Strong knowledge of ESRI GIS products (ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server)
Experience with ArcGIS SDE versioning (branch and traditional)
Web development using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Python, and C#
API development and integration (GeoJSON, ArcGIS API)
Version control (Git/GitHub)
Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
Experience with XML/XSLT and cloud-based enterprise architecture
Familiarity with Windows-based GIS servers and distributed computing
Background in the natural sciences
Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices and server administration
ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise administration
Experience with standard office productivity equipment
