Responsibilities
Strategic Advisory: Guide leadership teams through the pros, cons, and cost-benefit analyses of Power BI Premium vs. Microsoft Fabric. Provide clear roadmaps for architectural choices, specifically managing the trade-offs between data freshness (DirectQuery) and query performance
Performance Optimization: Diagnose and resolve complex performance bottlenecks. You must be an expert at optimizing DirectQuery performance through query folding, storage engine tuning, and backend data source optimization (SQL, Delta Tables)
Architecture Design: Design scalable, end-to-end data architectures using the Medallion Architecture. Determine the optimal connectivity strategy for various use cases, ensuring "heavy-user" deep dives don't overwhelm capacity
Connectivity Strategy: Lead the transition from traditional DirectQuery/Import models toward Direct Lake on OneLake, maximizing the performance of Fabric for large-scale datasets
Governance & Security: Establish best practices for workspace management, capacity planning, and Row-Level Security (RLS) across different connectivity modes
Qualification
Required
Expert-level knowledge of Microsoft Fabric (OneLake, Lakehouse, Warehouse) and Power BI (Composite models, Aggregations, XMLA endpoints)
Deep, hands-on experience with DirectQuery, including optimization of the underlying data source and managing the performance impacts of complex DAX over DirectQuery
Proficiency in DAX Studio, Tabular Editor, and SQL Profiler to tune data models and monitor the performance of DirectQuery connections
Advanced experience in Dimensional Modeling (Star Schema) and designing 'Gold' layer tables specifically optimized for Direct Lake and DirectQuery efficiency
Exceptional ability to explain technical trade-offs (e.g., latency vs. speed) to C-suite stakeholders and guide them on 'Total Cost of Ownership' for different architectural paths
