Economic Development Communications and Programs Intern

NEOGOV is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Communications and Programs Intern for the Fairfax City Economic Development Department. This internship offers hands-on experience in public-sector economic development, community engagement, and strategic communications, supporting various initiatives and marketing efforts.

Responsibilities

Assist in the coordination, research, preparation, and writing of the monthly e-newsletter using Mailchimp
Measure and report on the impact of the e-newsletter
Craft brand-aligned, high-quality copy for social media platforms (LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Threads) that effectively communicate the work of FCED
Proofread press releases and marketing materials for distribution
Keep regional media lists and the media coverage tracker up to date
Assist with drafting press releases and media briefing documents, when needed
Maintain the FCED website (gofairfaxcity.com) using WordPress
Attend team meetings as necessary
Assist with the planning, coordination, and implementation of FCED programs, events, and initiatives
Support logistics for business-facing programs, including outreach, registration tracking, and follow-up
Conduct research related to small business support, economic development initiatives, and community programs
Help collect and organize program data, feedback, and metrics for reporting and evaluation
Provide on-site support for events as needed
Provide support for social media content creation as needed
Provide general administrative support to FCED staff as needed
Assist with database management, document organization, and internal tracking
Support cross-functional projects that align with FCED’s mission and strategic goals
Other duties as assigned by FCED staff

Required

Current undergraduate or graduate student in communications, marketing, public administration, urban studies, business, economics, or a related field
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Highly organized with strong attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and WordPress
Interest in economic development, local government, community engagement, or small business support
Must have advanced writing skills and knowledge of Mailchimp, or a similar program
Work effectively, independently and as part of a team
Ability to prioritize projects and stay organized, and strong attention to detail

Preferred

Experience writing press releases, and updating websites using WordPress, or similar is preferred but not required
Familiarity with social media platforms; experience with Canva or similar design tools and MailChimp is a plus
