District Senior Safety Engineer

The District Senior Safety Engineer is responsible for performing professional level safety engineering work related to the Cal/OSHA program, including safety inspections, accident investigations, and consultations in construction, electrical, and industrial settings.

Responsibilities

Conduct specialized safety inspections, accident investigations, and consultations related to construction, electrical, and industrial occupational safety and health
Assist the District Manager and Regional Manager in developing procedures and guidelines for conducting audits, inspections, and accident investigations
Lead, plan, organize, review, and direct the work of teams assigned to perform inspections and special assignments
Evaluate work performance of safety engineers and prepare written training development plans to help improve staff performance for management
Conduct committee meetings to revise or propose new safety orders within the Cal/OSHA program
Perform in-service and on-the-job training of staff
Develop programs for promotion of safety concepts
Consult with labor, management, and public groups on complex and sensitive safety engineering problems/hazards
Assist the Regional Manager with the implementation and maintenance of health and safety programs
Assist the District Manager with planning, tracking, and reviewing workload
Provide technical advice to the Regional Manager, District Manager, and compliance staff
Assume some of the District Manager responsibilities in their absence

Required

Applicants must be either reachable on an employment list, have transfer eligibility or have reinstatement eligibility
Must have extensive experience, knowledge and skills in safety principles, practices and methods
Must be able to conduct specialized safety inspections, accident investigations, and consultations assignments related to construction, electrical, and industrial occupational safety and health
Must assist the District Manager and Regional Manager in developing procedures and guidelines for conducting audits, inspections, and accident investigations
Must lead, plan, organize, review and direct the work of teams assigned to perform inspections and special assignments
Must evaluate work performance of safety engineers and prepare written training development plans
Must conduct committee meetings to revise or propose new safety orders within the Cal/OSHA program
Must perform in-service and on-the-job training of staff
Must work in an assigned district office and travel throughout the state as required
Must develop programs for promotion of safety concepts
Must consult with labor, management and public groups on complex and sensitive safety engineering problems/hazards
Must assist the Regional Manager with the implementation and maintenance of health and safety programs
Must assist the District Manager with planning, tracking and reviewing workload
Must provide technical advice to the Regional Manager, District Manager and compliance staff
Must perform all work in accordance with DIR-DOSH policies, DOSH Compliance Policy and Procedure Manual, Directives, and Memorandums
Must be able to work outdoors 8 hours or more per day in a wide range of weather conditions
Must be able to sit at a desk, in a chair, and in front of a computer screen for extended periods of time
Must be able to move/walk and stand for extended periods of time
Must be able to use a multi-line telephone console or a cordless telephone with headset
Must be able to bend, squat, crouch, kneel, stoop and twist
Must be able to perform repetitive hand motion, simple grasping, fine finger manipulation, pushing and pulling with right and left hands
Must be able to reach (above and below shoulder level)
Must be able to move and transport up to 50 pounds of equipment or work related materials
Must be able to climb up and down/balance stairs, ladders, stoops, slopes
Must dress appropriately for working in the field, including proper use of personal protective equipment
Must be able to travel via private, State vehicle, or public transportation including overnight travel inside California
