Laboratory Assistant (Temporary)
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is seeking a dedicated individual to fill the role of Laboratory Assistant in the Plant Protection Division of the Department of Agriculture. The role involves identifying samples from invasive insect surveys and supporting entomology programs through various laboratory tasks.

Responsibilities
Utilizing a microscope and taxonomic keys to accurately identify insects from a range of samples, ensuring precise classification
Pinning and curating insect specimens for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's insect reference collection
Entering data from these samples into the necessary databases, maintaining meticulous records that contribute to the overall integrity of the program
Assisting the entomology staff in managing survey equipment, ensuring that all tools are properly maintained and ready for use
Keeping a detailed laboratory log of activities to track progress and findings
Undertaking other entomology-related duties as needed, contributing to the broader goals of the team
Qualification
Required
You must be in possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C driver's license or equivalent
You must be willing and able to work in Dauphin County, PA
You must be willing to work a temporary, full-time schedule without benefits
You must be available to work up to a 9-month position from approximately March 1 to September 29, 2026
You must be able to perform essential job functions
Preferred
Experience working in a laboratory
Experience performing or working with one of the following items: Microscope
Taxonomic keys
Identifying insects
Pin or curate insect specimens
Enter data from samples
Set up and monitor insect survey traps
Maintain laboratory log
Determine difference between target and non-target organisms
Determine difference between common biota in samples and rare biota
Proper preparation of insect specimens
