Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking an early-career Engineering Technologist to support the operation, maintenance, and improvement of their steam and power generation and distribution systems. The role involves hands-on work with equipment and collaboration with engineers and operators to ensure system reliability and support capital improvement projects.

Responsibilities

Serve as a technical point of contact for assigned steam and power systems with guidance from senior staff
Help resolve operational and maintenance issues using established engineering standards and procedures
Perform frequent field walk-downs to observe maintenance activities and system performance
Support preventive maintenance programs by reviewing procedures and checklists
Apply applicable codes and standards (ASME, NFPA, EPA, LANL standards) to real-world systems
Prepare technical documentation, calculations, and reports
Maintain system documentation to support safe operations and future upgrades
Assist with developing drawings and specifications for system repairs and upgrades
Review vendor submittals and engineering documents with oversight
Participate in construction inspections, site visits, and commissioning activities
Support pressure safety compliance, hazard evaluations, and event investigations
Lead condition assessments and system evaluations
Independently review and verify technical designs and system changes
Drive process improvements and instrumentation/control upgrades
Serve as a technical mentor to junior technologists

Required

Experience or strong interest in utility-scale steam or power systems
Familiarity with boilers, turbines, rotating equipment, or water treatment systems
Exposure to instrumentation, controls, or SCADA/OT systems
Familiarity with industrial codes and standards (ASME, NFPA, EPA)
Comfort working in both office and field environments
Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation for Engineering Technologist 2
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation for Engineering Technologist 3

Preferred

Experience in utility operations or maintenance environments
Interest in instrumentation, controls, and process optimization
Knowledge of DOE or regulated facility environments
EIT or Professional Engineering certification (supported but not required)
