Assistive Technologist(Adaptive Equipment Supervisor) - Murdoch Developmental Center
The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services is a large agency responsible for ensuring the health and well-being of North Carolinians. They are seeking an Assistive Technologist to provide engineering, supervisory, and administrative services for the Adaptive Equipment Shop, focusing on adaptive product design and the application of engineering principles to assist individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Responsibilities
Provide engineering, supervisory and administrative services necessary to support the day-to-day operation and facilities of the Adaptive Equipment Shop and technical personnel
Oversee adaptive product design and application and research and development of promising engineering concepts
Apply engineering principles and state-of-the-art technology to problem-solve barriers for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities
Design responsibilities include wheelchair design and customization, adaptive seating design or modifications, and resident safety equipment related to customized helmets and protective garments
Supervise activities such as scheduling, purchasing, training, safety reviews, performance reviews, and equipment reviews
Collaborate with the campus engineer, technical personnel, design systems and documentation, materials and acquisition management, and various project management activities
Collaborate with other professional departments and staff such as Medical, Psychology, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Direct Care
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in any field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience working with assistive technology that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Skill in the use of hand and power tools is required due to the fine tolerances needed for adaptive and special protective device fabrication and modification
To be considered for employment, applicants must be in good standing with the North Carolina Health Care Personnel Registry
Preferred
Documented experience using industrial machinery such as vertical mill, metal turning lathe, drill press, band saw, wire welding, plastic forming equipment and industrial sewing machinery
Basic knowledge of the science of assistive technology; working knowledge of various types of assistive technology, augmentative communication and durable medical equipment
Possess excellent interpersonal communication skills to collaborate within a team concept from product design through fabrication to meeting end user needs
Work experience in an intellectual and developmental disabilities setting
Documented supervisory/managerial experience
