Payroll Manager

LHH is partnering with a growing organization in the construction space to hire a hands-on Manager of Payroll. This leader will own end-to-end payroll operations, compliance across multiple jurisdictions, and the optimization of a complex payroll environment while mentoring a payroll team and driving continuous improvement across Finance, HR, IT, and Operations.

Responsibilities

Own weekly payroll execution for a large, distributed workforce—ensuring precision, speed, and audit‑ready controls
Review complex pay scenarios (overtime, bonuses/commissions, deductions, garnishments, tax levies) and resolve discrepancies at the source
Lead the payroll team —set expectations, develop talent, balance workload/coverage, and instill a service‑oriented culture
Guard compliance across federal, state, and local rules, including multi‑state and construction‑specific requirements (prevailing wage, certified payroll, Davis‑Bacon)
Run tax calendars —on‑time filings and remittances (weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual), with documentation ready for audits
Be the CMiC owner —govern earnings codes, deductions, tax tables, unions, job costing, labor rules, and security/roles; lead testing, upgrades, patches, and integrations
Tighten internal controls —standardize procedures, improve approvals/segregation of duties, and drive automation opportunities
Partner cross‑functionally with HR, Accounting, IT, and Operations to align payroll data with benefits, GL, job cost, and downstream reporting
Manage year‑end (W‑2s, corrections) and ensure accurate data feeds to benefits, tax, and reporting systems
Support employees and managers —serve as the escalation point for nuanced payroll questions with timely, professional resolutions

Required

Deep payroll leadership in a complex, multi-entity or multi-state environment; construction industry experience is a plus
CMiC payroll expertise (or equivalent ERP payroll ownership) and the technical aptitude to design, configure, and troubleshoot
Proven compliance mastery —prevailing wage, certified payroll, and Davis-Bacon; audit readiness and documentation discipline
People management track record —coaching high-performing payroll specialists, setting clear accountabilities, and raising the bar
Analytical problem-solving —root-cause mindset, comfort with job cost flows, reconciliations, and GL tie-outs
Discretion and integrity —flawless handling of sensitive data and consistent application of internal controls
Change leadership —process improvement, automation, and the ability to influence peers across Finance/HR/IT/Operations
