Assistant Director, Procurement and Commercial

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is undergoing significant transformation in its procurement and commercial services. The Assistant Director of Procurement & Commercial will lead strategic and operational procurement, ensuring compliance and driving value across the organization while developing a high-performing team.

Responsibilities

Lead both strategic and operational procurement services, positioning the function as a credible, influential voice at Executive and Board level
Shape and deliver an organisation-wide Procurement Strategy aligned to the NMC’s regulatory purpose and financial objectives
Provide expert commercial advice on major programmes, routes to market and contract models
Oversee high-value and complex procurement activity, embed best-practice contract and supplier management, and ensure full compliance with the Procurement Act 2023 and all relevant governance requirements
Drive efficiency, sustainability and innovation across the organisation
Champion value for money, lead initiatives such as spend analysis and the War on Waste programme, and build collaborative partnerships with other regulators to maximise collective buying power
Develop a high-performing team that delivers insight, assurance and measurable outcomes

Required

Significant senior-level experience leading procurement and commercial activity within a public sector or regulated environment
Strong track record of delivering value for money through complex, high-value contracts
Ability to operate at pace in a regulated setting, balancing risk, compliance and commercial opportunity
Strong analytical and financial skills
Comfortable translating data and market insight into clear, evidence-based recommendations for Executive and Board audiences
Credibility, influence and clarity in communication
Ability to engage senior stakeholders, challenge constructively and secure commitment
Experience in inspiring and developing a team
Ability to embed a culture of accountability, continuous improvement and professional excellence
