Product Safety Engineer II

Responsibilities

Support enforcement of the company’s Product Safety Compliance Policy and associated procedures
Conduct structured product hazard analysis for new products and support technical risk assessment activities such as CTS FMEA and FTA analysis via the Technical Risk Assessment for both new and existing products
Review designs, schematics, and test results to identify potential safety hazards or non-compliance
Assist in implementing risk-mitigation measures and documenting safety-related decisions
Monitor safety-related field reports via call center complaints, warranty and insurance claim data as well as service trends to identify potential emerging issues
Conduct investigations into alleged product safety concerns or injuries
Perform or support laboratory testing, fault replication, and component evaluations to determine potential causes
Prepare clear, concise summaries of investigation findings for internal review and to convey results to the respective product division QM/DE leaders, insurance claim adjusters and/or legal as applicable
Participate, support and/or facilitate Product Safety Reviews by preparing risk information, case summaries, or technical data in advance
Review product user manuals, precautionary statements, and labeling for clarity and adequacy of safety messaging and signal word usage in compliance with ANSI Z535 standards
Identify foreseeable misuse and evaluate associated risks to help reduce risk for potential liability and consumer harm
Ensure corrective actions identified during product safety reviews or other investigations are implemented and effective
Assist in reviewing and responding to consumer complaints received from U.S. and Canadian regulatory agencies
Provide technical inputs and testing support for regulatory inquiries coordinated by senior product safety engineers or Legal
Support the Product Liability Forensic Engineer and Legal as necessary on product liability matters, such as gathering technical information, documentation, and evidence as needed
Support external cause-and-origin experts by coordinating component reviews, providing documentation, or preparing test samples
Attend scene or product inspections held externally as required to examine artifacts remaining from a loss
Develop, update, and maintain internal product safety guidelines, tools, and test procedures as assigned
Support process improvement activities to increase effectiveness of incident detection, testing, and risk-assessment workflows
Participate in internal audits, safety program assessments, and compliance checks
Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, quality, manufacturing, and service organization to resolve safety issues
Participate in industry working groups, AHAM task forces, UL STP participation, or special engineering committees as assigned
Maintain confidentiality of all investigation and legal materials
Perform other duties as assigned

Required

Bachelor's degree (Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Mecha-Tronics or Industrial))
3-5 Years of Experience (Broad experience with household appliances or other electrical/gas)
3-5 Years of Experience (consumer products.)
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and technical problem-solving abilities
Ability to interpret design drawings, schematics, and test reports
Working knowledge of UL, CSA, IEC, ANSI safety standards a strong plus
Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare clear technical documentation
Understanding of product safety principles, hazard identification, and misuse evaluation
Familiarity with product liability considerations and regulatory frameworks
Proficiency with FMEA, cause-and-effect analysis, FTA's and 6-Sigma problem-solving tools
Strong skills in data analysis (Excel, Minitab, or similar)
Ability to manage multiple investigations and deadlines with strong organizational skills
Strong Time Management and Organizational skills
Ability to treat information as Confidential and Privileged regarding active investigations, legal matters, unreleased product specifications and development data
Good communication and organizational skills
A good understanding of Product Liability and Government regulations
Good understanding 6 Sigma and 8-D tools and principles
Strong proficiency with MS Excel
Strong proficiency in report writing and presenting information with PowerPoint
Experience dealing with uncertainty and resolving conflicts
Experience with safety related analytical and quality tools
Proficient with common mechanical and electrical measurement devices
Travel Percentage – 10%

Preferred

Prior product safety, quality, or reliability engineering experience
Strong proficiency with Power BI
Prior experience in Quality Engineering
