Responsibilities
Define the data architecture strategy for the IoT platform, including build vs. buy decisions and technology selection to support long-term scale
Design a real-time data infrastructure capable of ingesting thousands of data points per minute across diverse BMS protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks)
Architect ML-ready data pipelines to support predictive energy modeling, anomaly detection, and automated optimization
Establish data quality frameworks, monitoring standards, and observability practices to identify issues in hours rather than weeks
Partner with engineering leadership to align data infrastructure investments with business priorities and product roadmap goals
Drive cross-team technical decisions related to data modeling, pipeline design, and integration patterns
Mentor engineers on data engineering best practices, conduct design reviews, and raise the technical bar across the organization
Translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders, enabling informed decision-making and clear tradeoff discussions
Qualification
Required
8+ years of data engineering experience, including at least 2 years in a staff-level role
Proven experience designing and scaling data architectures, with technology choices you would confidently make again
Deep expertise in data orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow, dbt, Prefect), streaming systems, and time-series databases
Experience building data platforms that support ML and AI workloads
Strong, well-reasoned opinions on data modeling, balanced with openness to new information
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence without authority and build consensus across teams
Preferred
Experience with IoT data pipelines or building management systems
Background building data infrastructure at a growth-stage company
Hands-on experience with real-time streaming architectures (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis, Flink)
Passion for sustainability and energy efficiency
Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines for automated data processing
