Responsibilities
Perform field visits to collect data on utility poles and electrical infrastructure, ensuring accuracy for design packages
Design overhead and underground electric distribution systems, preparing construction drawings, bills of materials, and documentation
Provide calculations such as pole loading, voltage drop, easement validation, permitting requirements, and cost estimating
Conduct pole analysis modeling, develop materials lists, perform GIS reviews, and prepare or update design prints
Support pre-construction activities and answer design and site-related questions
Review client records, GIS data, and field information to identify conflicts, verify accuracy, and incorporate updates
Lead junior technicians through data collection, drafting, and utility design standards
Manage multiple projects while meeting quality, schedule, and client expectations
Apply company safety rules, client standards, and regulatory requirements (RUS, NESC, permitting)
Collaborate with engineers, designers, and construction crews, participating in walkdowns and coordination meetings
Work independently with strong communication and documentation practices
Qualification
Required
2–5 years of experience in a design technician, engineering technician, or utility design role
Foundational experience in utility distribution network design, overhead/underground layouts, pole line design, etc
Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar drafting/design software
Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and utility standards
Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office
Client-facing experience and strong communication skills
Willingness to travel for fielding assignments, as needed (mileage reimbursed)
Preferred
Experience in gas and/or electric distribution design
Experience with DDS design software tools
Knowledge of GIS systems such as SmallWorld or Bentley Utility Designer
Associate degree or advanced technical degree in a related field
Experience mentoring junior technicians
Strong attention to detail, quality, and safety practices
