Supervisory Wildland Firefighter (Smokejumper Training Manager)

Responsibilities

Participate in the development of smokejumper training policies
Perform the administrative and human resource management functions relative to the staff supervised
Plan, schedule and coordinate all aspects of smokejumper training
Serve as an active smokejumper, smokejumper spotter, and parachute rigger
Responsible for overall training administration, including delegation of training assignments, prioritization, procurement, purchasing, inventory, and documentation
Prepare lesson plans, write manuals, develop smokejumper specific training courses, supervises and evaluates instructors involved in training and refreshing smokejumpers in parachuting procedures and fire suppression skills
Duties listed above is at GW-11 grade level

Required

Must be a U.S. Citizen or National
Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt
Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check
Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served
Per Public Law 104-134 all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution
Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check
Must be 18 years of age
This is a drug testing designated position. You will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing
Must pass the Work Capacity Test for certain Interagency Fire Program Management or Fire Program Management positions
Subject to one year supervisory/managerial probationary period unless prior service is creditable
Secondary Coverage: Prior wildland firefighting experience is required
Willing to live/work in remote locations (volatile/unpredictable)
Currently licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a Senior Parachute Rigger
Specialized Experience Requirement for GW-10: Applicants must have one-year specialized experience equivalent to the GW-09 grade level
Specialized experience is defined as: Assisted with one or more program responsibilities such as, plan and coordinate smokejumper training, operations, and/or prescribed fire
Specialized Experience Requirement for GW-11: Applicants must have one-year specialized experience equivalent to the GW-10 grade level
Specialized experience is defined as: Assisted with more than one smokejumper program responsibilities such as, planned, scheduled and coordinated all aspects of smokejumper training
Smokejumper duties present unusual hazards and require that personnel be in excellent physical condition and possess a high degree of emotional stability and mental alertness
Before entrance on duty, and periodically during employment, smokejumpers must undergo a medical exam, physical conditioning, and an adeptness test
During the training period, incumbents are continually evaluated on their ability to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in various aspects of parachute jumping and smokejumper-related tasks
Must be currently licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a Senior Parachute Rigger
Currently or have been previously qualified as a smokejumper on an organized wildland fire smokejumper crew
FIREFIGHTER RETIREMENT COVERAGE: This is a secondary firefighter position under 5 USC 8336 (CSRS) and 8412(d) (FERS)
WORK CAPACITY TEST (WCT) for Wildland Firefighters: This position participates in wildland firefighting activities
