Executive Director at CARE
Nonprofit Professionals Now is supporting CARE in their search for an Executive Director. The Executive Director will provide leadership and strategic direction to ensure CARE's mission of fostering healthier communities is met, overseeing financial management, organizational administration, fundraising, and community relations.
Responsibilities
Provide strong financial leadership to ensure CARE’s fiscal stability and long-term sustainability
Develop, manage, and monitor the annual operating budget in partnership with the Board and Finance Committee
Oversee grant management, financial reporting, audits, and compliance with federal, state, and local funding requirements
Ensure financial systems, controls, and policies are effective, transparent, and well understood
Identify financial risks and opportunities and communicate them clearly to the Board
Ensure that visibility into operating results and contract performance enables strong program oversight and overall sound organizational fiscal management
Serve as the chief executive and primary leader of CARE, setting clear priorities and direction aligned with the mission
Lead organizational strategies to strengthen systems, prioritizing clarity and consistency
Guide strategic planning and ensure goals translate into actionable work plans
Act as a decisive problem-solver while maintaining openness to input and learning
Oversee day-to-day operations with a focus on continuous improvement, ensuring efficient systems, workflows, and administrative processes
Develop and implement organizational policies, procedures, and internal controls, ensuring all programs have clear and consistent operational guidelines
Provide strong oversight of contract management, including administration of sub‑grantees
Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and contractual obligations
Identify organizational risks and implement effective mitigation strategies
Maintain clear and consistent communication across the organization to support effective operations
Develop and implement CARE’s comprehensive fundraising strategy encompassing individual giving, major gifts, grants, corporate sponsorships, special events, and planned giving
Build and sustain strong relationships with donors, funders, community partners, and other philanthropic stakeholders, representing the organization with professionalism and enthusiasm to inspire support
Lead the identification of grant opportunities, ensure high‑quality proposal submissions, and oversee compliance and reporting for all awarded grants
Leverage donor‑management systems and performance metrics to monitor progress, assess effectiveness, and guide strategic decision‑making
Building on existing strengths and competencies, expand and diversify CARE’s revenue by pursuing innovative funding models, fee‑for‑service opportunities, and strategic partnerships beyond traditional public grants and contracts
Provide strong, consistent leadership and supervision to senior staff and department leaders
Foster a culture of respect, accountability, psychological safety, and inclusion
Ensure clear roles, expectations, and performance feedback across the organization
Lead staffing decisions, including hiring, reorganization, development
Support staff morale, retention, and professional growth, particularly in a high-stress service environment
Work in close partnership with the Board of Directors and Executive Committee
Support the Board in fulfilling its governance, fiduciary, and strategic responsibilities
Provide timely, accurate, and transparent information to support Board decision-making
Assist with Board recruitment, onboarding, and development, ensuring clarity of roles and expectations
Serve as CARE’s primary spokesperson and representative in the community
Build and maintain strong relationships with community partners, funders, government agencies, and other stakeholders
Advocate for CARE’s mission and for the needs of people experiencing poverty, housing instability, and crisis
Strengthen CARE’s reputation as a trusted, credible, and essential community organization
Qualification
Required
Demonstrated leadership experience, preferably in a nonprofit or human services organization
Proven financial management experience, including budgeting, grants management, and oversight of complex funding streams
Strong fundraising experience, including individual giving and grant development
Experience leading and supervising staff in a values-driven, mission-focused environment
Experience working effectively with a nonprofit board
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Experience navigating change, ambiguity, and organizational complexity
Commitment to equity, inclusion, and respectful leadership
Preferred
Knowledge of issues related to poverty, housing instability, mental health, and substance use is strongly preferred
