Estimator

Wagner Construction Inc. is focused on civil construction estimating and is seeking an Estimator I to support the estimating team. This early-career role involves assisting with quantity takeoffs, bid preparation, and learning about civil and sitework projects.

Responsibilities

Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for earthwork, utilities (wet and dry), paving, and small structures using plans, specifications, and digital takeoff tools
Assist Estimator II and the Chief Estimator with building self-perform estimates, including labor, equipment, materials, and basic production rates
Read and interpret drawings, specifications, addenda, and geotechnical reports to help identify scope, phasing, and basic risks
Enter quantities and cost items into HeavyBid (or other estimating tools) under guidance, following standard item and cost-code structures
Help assemble bid documents, bid forms, clarifications, and supporting schedules for internal reviews and formal submissions
Request, receive, and organize subcontractor and supplier quotations; maintain quote logs and file structures
Track addenda, ensure drawing and specification sets are current, and clearly communicate changes to the team
Support bid day activities, including last-minute quote tabulation, data entry, and updating bid summaries under direction
Participate in post-bid and post-job reviews to compare estimated versus actual quantities, production, and costs
Help update standard crews, production rates, and cost data in coordination with more senior estimators
Complete required training on Bluebeam, HeavyBid basics, and company procedures within the first 6–9 months in the role
Seek feedback and coaching from Estimator II/Chief Estimator, field superintendents, and project managers to better understand how estimates translate to field performance
Maintain clear, professional communication with estimating team members, project managers, field leaders, and support staff
Demonstrate reliability around bid schedules and deadlines; proactively communicate when help or clarification is needed
Support the company’s safety culture by understanding how jobsite logistics, access, and safety constraints impact production, methods, and cost

Required

1–3 years of experience in civil construction estimating, field engineering, or construction operations
Basic understanding of civil construction means and methods for earthwork, utilities, and paving
Foundational plan-reading skills; able to navigate drawings, details, and specifications with guidance
Familiarity with Bluebeam or similar PDF markup/takeoff tool; expected to become proficient within the first 6–9 months
Willingness to learn HeavyBid and digital takeoff/modeling tools (e.g., AGTEK or similar) as assigned
Comfortable with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and basic file organization practices
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in calculations and data entry
Curious, coachable mindset with a strong desire to learn estimating and field operations
Organized and able to manage multiple tasks in support of several bids with oversight
Effective verbal and written communication skills

Preferred

Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field; equivalent field experience will be considered
Exposure to heavy civil/sitework projects (earthwork, underground utilities, paving)
