Tradesworker/Maintainer I - 1st shift
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is seeking a Tradesworker/Maintainer I to support the daily operation, safety, and upkeep of university buildings and grounds. The role involves performing a range of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks, assisting with plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and mechanical work, as well as custodial and groundskeeping activities.

Responsibilities
Cleans, sanitizes, and stocks restroom facilities and drinking fountains in accordance with established University health standards
Cleans all surfaces in offices, classrooms, common spaces, laboratories, meeting rooms, etc
Empties and cleans waste and recycling receptacles and transports contents to designated disposal sites
Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes, polishes, buffs, and applies special finishes to floors
Vacuums, shampoos, and spot cleans carpets and walk-off mats
Replaces light bulbs for internal and external fixtures around the perimeter of buildings and cleans lenses and light covers
Cleans return air grilles and supply diffusers to maintain proper airflow and indoor air quality
Washes interior and exterior windows, glass surfaces, and partitions
Dusts, polishes, removes graffiti from and rearrange furniture
Moves furniture, equipment, books, musical instruments, laboratory equipment, etc
Sets up and dismantles staging, chairs, tables, and other required equipment for campus events
Locks and unlocks buildings and turns buildings lighting on or off
Identifies maintenance and repair needs and reports condition for work order processing
Determines required cleaning supplies for assigned work areas and requisitions materials through supervisor
Requisitions other supplies and materials, tracks inventory levels, verifies accuracy of deliveries, and maintains detailed records and documentation of orders, usage, and related purchasing activity
Makes general repairs of a minor nature using simple hand tools (i.e., tighten screws on furniture, snake toilet drains, change belts on vacuum cleaners)
Sweeps and cleans walkways around assigned buildings and keeps entries free of snow, ice, and other debris
Services bottled water stations
Delivers supplies and equipment to on- and off-campus University buildings, as required
Works with Trades in maintenance, repair, and construction work under the supervision of qualified craft workers
Assists in setting up premises for campus events, including transportation of chairs, tables and related materials, physically arranging same
May be temporarily assigned to the Grounds crew during peak maintenance periods or for campus event needs (See Skilled Laborer job description for possible assignment details)

Services and/or assists in servicing and replacing minor plumbing fixtures such as faucets, washers, flushometers, valves, etc
Maintains and makes routine repairs to electrically powered equipment and appliances (e.g., motors, pumps, lamps, fans, vacuums, scrubbers) according to instructions from journeyman and equipment service manuals
Performs other electrical work not requiring a licensed electrician such as replacing light bulbs and fuses, as needed
Performs preventive maintenance and makes repairs to heating, ventilation, refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment (e.g., replacing belts on motors, changing filters, replacing bearings and cooling coils) according to instructions and equipment service manuals
Adjusts heating and/or air-conditioning controls to maintain appropriate temperature and reports irregularities in system performance
Maintains plumbing, electrical, and HVAC machinery, equipment and tools by cleaning, lubricating, greasing, oiling, etc., to ensure their optimum working order
Maintains carpentry and construction machinery, equipment and tools by cleaning, lubricating, greasing, oiling, etc., to ensure their optimum working order
Assists in construction and assembly (e.g., tables, wooden barricades, window screens) and performs other minor carpentry work using hand and power tools such as drills and saws
Installs glass in windows and doors (e.g., inserting and fastening pre-cut glass in window sash)
Assists in the installation and repair of floor coverings such as tiles, linoleum and rugs
Assists in erecting and/or dismantling scaffolding and/or rigging
Maintains groundskeeping machinery, equipment and tools by cleaning, lubricating, greasing, oiling, etc., to ensure their optimum working order
Operates the following mechanical equipment, all of which is required in the maintenance of a Campus facility: riding lawn movers, self-propelled lawn mowers, weed trimmers, snow blowers, and electric trimmers
Performs manual labor and grounds maintenance tasks including landscaping, snow/ice removal, and campus upkeep to support the appearance and functionality of University grounds
Assists skilled trades and operates grounds equipment to support maintenance, construction, and athletic field preparation activities
Performs routine inspections, basic servicing, and documentation of vehicle and equipment use, maintenance needs, and related work tasks
Performs related duties such as furnishing tools and materials to tradesmen during the course of a job; holding materials or tools in place while journeyman works on them; cleaning work area upon completion; operating or using soldering and/or brazing equipment; erecting and dismantling wall partitions
Identifies maintenance or repair needs and fills out work requests to facilitate repairs needed in an assigned work area
Ensures safe work practices by following PPE requirements, regulations, and University standards, and participates in training to stay current on best practices
Identifies equipment and operational issues, coordinates repairs, and inspects work to ensure compliance with specifications and standards
Qualification
Required
Knowledge of the use and operation of hand-held power tools such as drills, etc
Knowledge of the types and uses of small hand tools such as pliers, chisels, hammers, etc
Knowledge of the methods used in the care and maintenance of small and hand-held power tools
Skill in using small hand-held tools such as pliers, hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc
Skill in using hand-held power tools such as drills, etc
Ability to follow oral and written instructions
Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others

Applicants must have at least six (6) months full-time or equivalent part-time experience in performing manual labor in connection with general construction, maintenance work, or equipment maintenance
