Learning & Accessibility Program Manager

Responsibilities

Provide oversight and direction to academic support programs that address professional and personal attributes that contribute to medical student academic success and wellbeing. Act independently and use expertise to administer individualized study plans, pre-matriculation programs, tutorial support, academic coaching programs, peer-to-peer mentoring, and other programs
Supervise full-time Learning & Disability Coordinator in implementation of disability accommodations, procurement of services, assistive technology, and medical student tutoring program. Complete annual performance evaluations, and guide/recommend professional development opportunities. Supervise 35+ medical student tutors
Lead groups of faculty, staff, and students in the development, planning, implementation, and assessment of existing and new programs for medical students. This includes workshops, courses, seminars focused on board preparation, study skills, and/or clinical skills integration
Serve as course director for Trunk Consolidation Course for students preparing for USMLE Step 1 exam
Provide continuous academic support and academic counseling for medical students. Meet privately with students to evaluate and support academic performance. As appropriate, identify and/or provide referrals to a network of specialists to further ascertain student learning abilities and difficulties
Provide leadership, advocacy, expertise, oversight, and direction to Learning & Accessibility support programs through partnerships with OMSE leadership, in particular the Assistant Dean, Director of Student Affairs, and Counseling and Advising staff, as well as other entities at the Medical School and campus. Establish programs that address the specific professional and personal attributes contributing to medical student academic success and wellbeing. Act independently and utilize expertise in order to administer individualized study plans, tutorial support, academic coaching programs, peer-to-peer mentoring, study skill seminars, and wellness programs
Coordinate remediation of medical student gaps in clinical knowledge with clinical faculty as required
Serve and participate on medical student Competency Committees
Contribute to innovations in the medical student curriculum through work with members of the Office of Medical Student Education
Stay abreast of resources and best practices in learning support for medical students through active participation in professional societies and networking
Consult with medical school applicants regarding disability services available within UMMS
Review documentation from professionals qualified to diagnose disabilities, including neuropsychologists, medical doctors, and other professionals
On a case-by-case basis, identify curricular barriers and identify appropriate accommodations. Exercise professional judgement and specialized training to conduct the interactive process required for determining eligibility for disability accommodations in both the didactic and clinical settings
Provide ongoing monitoring and collaboration with students with disabilities, faculty, administrators, and staff to ensure effective and seamless implementation of approved accommodations
Refer students for neuropsychological testing, psychological, and therapeutic support as required
Participate in resolution of any conflict that arises in the implementation of disability accommodations
Interpret and apply the UMMS Technical Standards appropriately; with Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, co-chair Advisory Board for Accommodations and Technical standards (ABATS)
Advise and assist students in the process of applying for accommodations for USMLE exams; review personal statements, certify initial applications, and provide guidance in the filing of appeals if accommodation requests are denied
Engage in outreach and advocacy for students with disabilities
Collaborate with Student Accessibility and Accommodation Services and other University groups involved with disability, equity, and inclusion
Maintain affiliation and engagement with professional organizations to keep abreast of disability-related laws and best practices in health sciences higher education; consult with University of Michigan ADA Coordinator and Office of General Counsel as needed

Required

Master's Degree in relevant social or behavioral science discipline (e.g., Counseling, Education, Psychology)
At least 5 years of relevant experience working in an educational setting with demonstrable skills in academic and student program development
Ability to evaluate learning difficulties, familiarity with diagnostic assessment tools, expertise with developing individual and programmatic interventions to improve learning ability
Knowledge of relevant disability laws (ADA, Section s504 and 508 of Rehabilitation Act of 1973)
Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills
Proven ability to work well with faculty, students, and staff, and as a member of a team
Outstanding attention to detail and project deadlines
Proven ability to maintain individual rights to privacy and confidentiality
