Associate Attorney - Hybrid - Oakland Disability Rights Firm

They are seeking an Associate Attorney to litigate disability discrimination cases in both federal and state court and manage all aspects of the litigation process from intake through resolution.

Law Practice

Responsibilities

Reviewing, investigating, and working up potential cases, including evaluating legal theories, damages, and evidentiary support; gathering records and other pre-suit discovery; and drafting well-researched complaints in state and federal court
Interviewing clients, witnesses, and other relevant parties, and maintaining regular, clear communication with clients throughout the litigation process
Managing all aspects of discovery, including drafting and responding to written discovery, meeting and conferring with opposing counsel, preparing discovery motions, and ensuring compliance with court deadlines
Taking and defending depositions of parties, fact witnesses, and experts, including preparing outlines, exhibits, and deposition strategy
Drafting, briefing, and arguing dispositive and non-dispositive motions, including motions to dismiss, motions for summary judgment, discovery motions, and motions in limine
Preparing cases for trial and serving as trial counsel, including developing trial strategy, preparing witnesses and exhibits, conducting direct and cross-examinations, and participating in settlement negotiations and trial proceedings
Upon demonstrating competence, the attorney will serve as lead counsel on cases
The successful candidate will work independently, exercise sound judgment, and seek guidance from other senior attorneys appropriate

Required

Active California State Bar membership required (pending CA bar applications considered for candidates with substantial experience in other jurisdictions)
5+ years of civil litigation experience in state and/or federal court (the more experience, the better)
Superior research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
Experience taking and defending depositions
Ability to work collaboratively, adapt to changing circumstances, and manage the demands of a litigation practice
Demonstrated interest in expanding the law on behalf of the disability community

Preferred

Trial experience is strongly preferred
Experience in both state and federal court is preferred
Experience working with, or a personal connection to, the disability community is a plus
We strongly prefer candidates with a demonstrated commitment to public interest or social justice work
