Accelerator Technologist II - Mechanical (Bargaining Unit)

Responsibilities

Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings for assembly, fabrication, and installation of mechanical and vacuum components
Experience operating cranes, hoists, and forklifts for safely moving large equipment
Demonstrated skills in repairing, assembling, testing, and installing mechanical components in both shop and field environments, including water and electrical connections and anchoring
Experience performing hipot and pressure testing on magnets and magnet coils
Ability to follow detailed procedures and work instructions precisely
Proficient with manual shop equipment such as drill presses, band saws, belt sanders, and grinders
Skilled in using precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, height gauges) to verify part specifications
Experience handling cryogenic liquids and cryogenic systems
Ability to perform basic plumbing and tube-bending operations
Competence in selecting and using appropriate hand tools
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Strong task-planning, organizing, and communication skills
Consistent record of meeting quality and schedule requirements while balancing efficiency and accuracy
Understanding of shop practices and safety requirements
Ability to recognize when to seek technical or safety assistance and escalate issues through proper management channels
Valid California driver’s license with an acceptable driving record for on-site vehicle operation

Basic precision-assembly skills and understanding of UHV (ultra-high vacuum) handling techniques
Experience transporting and handling cryogenic accelerator cavities
Ability to perform simple operations using sheet-metal equipment
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
Basic machining skills using manual mills and/or lathes
