Director of Camping and Properties

Connecticut Rivers Council, Scouting America is seeking an experienced and driven Camping and Properties professional to join their senior leadership team. This role is pivotal in implementing best practices for camping operations and property management, ensuring safety and profitability across all programs and facilities.

Responsibilities

Carries out the strategic and operational plans of camping operations
Provides written operational, safety, and financial reports to the Scout Executive/Chief Executive Officer no less than monthly, including updates on revenue performance, occupancy, staffing, property conditions, and compliance with NCAP and state/local regulations
Provides regular reports to the Camping Committee and Properties Committee, including financial results, safety status, program performance, and capital project updates
Immediately reports to the Scout Executive any significant safety incident, regulatory violation, property hazard, or situation that may expose the council to legal, reputational, or financial risk
Leverages prior for-profit and/or not-for-profit camp leadership experience to build programs that effectively maximize occupancy and revenue of Greater LA Scouting camp properties
Plans, promotes, and directs the council’s year-round outdoor programs and operations, including managing trained and talented full-time and seasonal staff
Provides engaging leadership and training to camp rangers, maintenance staff, and seasonal summer camp staff
Provides leadership and training to the council camping committee and its other related stakeholders
In conjunction with the Director of Finance and Business Operations, develops the annual budget for camping and properties and oversees activities and events that support achieving or exceeding that budget. Reviews the camping results versus budget with the Director of Finance and Business Operations each month
Develops and presents an annual Camping & Properties Operations Plan—including program goals, staffing, revenue forecasts, safety plans, and facility maintenance schedules—to the Scout Executive and Board Camping/Properties Committees
In collaboration with Human Resources, recruits, hires, trains, and evaluates the performance of camping staff. Coaches camping staff where appropriate to develop a strong performing team, including maintaining records of achievements and areas for improvement for each employee
Provides oversight of maintenance and capital improvement projects, contracts, and vendors with a high level of integrity, ensuring on-budget and on-time delivery of high-quality results
Maintains a multi-year capital improvement and deferred maintenance plan for all council properties, including estimated costs, timelines, and funding priorities
Proactively engages with local, state, and national land use and land management agencies on behalf of Greater LA Scouting to maximize the best economic returns from Greater LA Scouting properties
Responsible for implementing and enforcing safety policies for all camping activities- including NCAP standards, state and local regulatory agencies, National Scouting Program accreditations and certifications
During the scouting off-season for resident camps, develops and expands third-party programs with school districts, and other not-for-profit, youth and family organizations and programs aligned with the Greater LA Scouting mission
Works with the volunteer Board of Advisors, senior leadership team, field team, and fundraising/development team to raise the necessary funds for camp program scholarships
Maintains and develops meaningful, purposeful, and strategic relationships with camp alumni and other benefactors
Oversees the camp reservation and registration systems to ensure ease of use, accurate billing, and excellent customer service
Implements customer satisfaction and program evaluation tools, and uses data to drive continuous improvements in program quality and guest experience
Collaborates with the marketing/communications team to promote year-round camping programs, property rentals, and outdoor experiences
Supports fundraising efforts related to camping and capital improvements, including donor cultivation, site tours, and providing operational data for grant proposals and campaigns
Creates a library of documented camping and property management policies and procedures, including camp operations, asset listings, and maintenance records. Through collaboration with the Director of Finance and Business Operations, reviews new policies and procedures and updates existing ones as required
Performs other related duties as required by the council or the CEO/Scout Executive

Required

Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college
At least 10 years of experience in camp or outdoor hospitality management, marketing, and operations
Multi-year proven track record of camping hospitality, marketing, and operations leadership success
Extensive experience with developing and implementing 'best practices' for camp and outdoor hospitality businesses
