Responsibilities
Lead the fabrication department through direct, hands-on involvement in daily shop operations
Perform fabrication, fitting, and troubleshooting as needed to support production and set workmanship expectations
Act as the technical authority for fabrication processes, including welding, fitting, machining coordination, and assembly prep
Plan and coordinate shop activities to meet production schedules, quality standards, and delivery commitments
Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications, ensuring accurate execution on the floor
Enforce quality standards and reduce rework through proper methods, training, and oversight
Develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures, safety practices, and shop discipline
Monitor productivity, labor utilization, material flow, and overall shop efficiency; address issues in real time
Identify and implement practical process improvements to increase throughput, safety, and quality
Train, mentor, and develop fabrication personnel through direct coaching and by example
Collaborate closely with engineering, materials, and assembly teams to ensure smooth handoffs and quick issue resolution
Maintain a safe, organized, and professional shop environment
Qualification
Required
Minimum of five years of leadership experience in a fabrication role within a heavy manufacturing or industrial environment
Proven ability to personally perform fabrication and fitting work in a production setting
Strong technical knowledge of fabrication processes, including welding, cutting, fitting, forming, and blueprint reading
Experience serving as the technical authority and decision-maker for fabrication teams
Ability to lead through presence, example, and hands-on credibility
Demonstrated success improving shop efficiency, quality, and workflow through practical process improvements
Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with engineers, supervisors, and skilled trades
Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Preferred
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field preferred; substantial hands-on fabrication experience will be strongly considered in lieu of a degree
