Field Inspector

The City of New York's Fire Department (FDNY) is seeking a full-time Associate Inspector (Electrical) in the Bureau of Fire Prevention's Fire Alarm Inspection Unit. The successful candidate will conduct complex inspections of fire alarm systems and ensure compliance with New York City codes and standards.

Responsibilities

Conduct complex inspections of fire alarm systems, fire pumps, life safety and emergency alarm systems in all types of buildings
Ensure compliance with NYC applicable codes, rules, and standards
Inspect complex phased installations in super high-rise buildings and facilities in excess of one million square feet
Coordinate with other City agencies on matters concerning fire and life safety

Required

Six years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician, designer, or inspector of electrical installations for light, heat and/or power distribution, traffic signals, fire alarm detection or communication systems
Four years of experience as described in '1' above, and one of the following: (a) 60 credits towards a degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology from an accredited college or university; or (b) Two years of full-time training in an acceptable electrical program in an accredited technical school
Completion of an apprentice program, at least three years in length, in the electrical trade or electrical inspection and either (a) three years of experience as described in '1' above or (b) one year of experience as described in '1' above and 60 credits or two years of education as described in '2' above
A license as a professional engineer or registered architect issued pursuant to the New York State Education Law
Education and/or experience which is equivalent to '1,' '2,' or '3' above
To be eligible for placement to Assignment Level II, individuals other than licensed professional engineers or registered architects must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, at least one year of experience as described in '1' above, in a supervisory capacity

Preferred

Extensive knowledge of the New York City Fire Code, New York City Building Code, Natural Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, and other related regulations
Excellent verbal and communication skills
Extensive knowledge of life safety systems- Class E, J and other complex systems
Specific knowledge of NFPA 72
NICET certification
Bachelor's degree of Arts or Bachelor Degree of Science and previous experience in design, installation or inspection of fire protection systems
One (1) year of field inspection experience in the FAIU or fire alarm industry as an installer
Extensive knowledge of the Fire Alarm Inspection Unit operation
